3931. Leaf from a Latin version of the Bible

Notes:
A leaf from a Latin version of the Bible, printed at Paris in 1558 by the heirs of Carola Guillard, relict of Claude Chevallon. This version was edited by Johannes Benedictus. The marginal notes show where the Latin is different from the original Hebrew and Greek, and also gives a more literal interpretations of words and phrases. The recto side of the leaf is marked as page 249; the verso side is marked 350.

3938. Book Distribution to Allied POWs at Muensingen

Notes:
Social workers and neutral inspectors often visited prison camps to meet prisoners. In this wood block print, a social worker, probably a YMCA secretary, distributes books to French and Russian prisoners of war at Muensingen. Books were important for entertainment to help POW's pass their time and to support education programs.

3939. Civilian Internment Camp at Traunstein

Notes:
A large group of civilian internees stand in the prison compound at Traunstein in Bavaria. The Germans rounded up enemy aliens early in the war and incarcerated them in civilian internment camps. As portrayed in this picture, most of the inmates at Traunstein were males and the Germans sought to prevent their return to their homes in Allied countries where they could take up arms against Germany.

3940. Storing Potatoes at Buetow

Notes:
A photograph from the watch tower in Buetow provides a general view of the prison camp, including the wooden barracks (note the barrack under construction in the background). The Russian prisoners have dug trenches to store the mountains of potatoes in preparation for the long winter. They are working under the direction of German non-commissioned officers. Potatoes were the primary source of nutrition for Allied POWs in prison camps.
