- The YMCA encouraged civilian internees at Ruhleben to plant gardens outside their barracks to improve the appearance of the camp and to give the prisoners projects to help them pass their idle time while in captivity. The Ruhleben Horticultural Society provided prizes to the best garden in this April 1917 competition.

- British internees exercised self-government during their incarceration at Ruhleben, which included the election of camp administrators. This drawing shows a variety of election campaign posters at the bill-posting station in the prison camp. The British chaffed under German administration and demanded internal administration.

- This is a sketch of Peter, aged thirteen, who was the youngest prisoner at Torgau. He had been a powder monkey (boys who provided ammunition to artillery or troops in battle) in the Russian Army and probably followed his father into military service when the Russians mobilized in 1914.

- This table indicates the articles of clothing distributed to Allied prisoners of war in the German prison camp at Germersheim between April 1915 and March 1918. The list provides an overview of the caps, scarves, jackets, pants, shirts, underwear, wash rags, boots, Oxford shoes, wooden shoes, coats, gloves, and socks provided by the Germans during the war.

- French prisoners and German staff members prepare dinner in the huge cookers in the background of the photograph of the camp kitchen at Guetersloh. The food will be served in the dining hall in the large pots sitting on the table. Mass production of rations was essential to feed large numbers of prisoners three times a day.

- Marginalia in different hands in German, Contemporary brown leather boards; two concentric double blind-ruled borders, filled with blind-stamped shell and flower ornaments; diapered center panel, lozenges containing blind-stamped flower and eagle ornaments; brass and leather strap-and-pin fastener; front and back pastedowns are parchment leaves; engraving of a saint’s deathbed scene removed from another text and affixed to front pastedown. In a green cloth clamshell box, with green leather spine., Text in gothic liturgical book hand in black ink, lightly ruled in brown, with first and last one or two horizontal rules extending to edge of leaf; prickings visible along fore-edge of leaves; 18 lines per page; headings, superscript corrections, and ceremonial instructions in red; sentence initials touched in red; alternating red and blue capitals; footnotes in German in brown, with sentences touched in red; catchwords in brown, circled in red., Manual or office book compiled for a Dominican nunnery, probably in Nuremberg during the third quarter of the 15th century, possibly between 1450 and 1469. The compilation of liturgies and prayers includes the Communion for the sick; Extreme Unction to be offered in the death of a sister; the Mass for the dead; various litanies of saints, with multiple references to St. Dominic, and local German saints such as St. Cunegund (whose relics are in Bamberg); St. Heinrich (Henry II, husband of Cunegund, also of Bamberg); and St. Sebald (patron saint of Nuremberg). Also included are diagrams in lower margins, written in German, outlining the stages of liturgical processions in the nunnery. Rubrics refer to “swester”, and Latin prayers are written in the feminine case., Gothic liturgical book hand, Chant music included throughout test; music arranged on red 4-line staves with square notation in black; Latin words., and Jointly purchased by Western Michigan University and the Newberry Library in 1996.

- Election leaflet supporting Adolf Hitler for election in the 1932 Reichspresident election. It attacks the SPD and the KPD for accusing Hitler of being the political whip of social reaction, and blames the problems of the Weimar Republic on their leadership. It includes Hitler's motto, "For freedom, work and bread." A large portion of Hitler's speech from April 7, 1932 is included.
