- Dr. Marcie Ray, ethnomusicologist and assistant professor of musicology at the Michigan State University College of Music, delivers a talk entitled, "Love, sex and greed : reflecting gender and class in French comic opera," at the Michigan State University Museum. Ray describes the history of the French aristocracy, beginning with King Louis XIV, and the role it played in the development of French opera. Ray answers questions from the audience. Ray is introduced by Michigan State University Professor John P. Beck. Part of the "Our Daily Work/Our Daily Lives" Brown Bag series sponsored by the MSU School of Human Resources and Labor Relations, the MSU Museum, and co-sponsored by the MSU Center for Gender in Global Context, and the MSU Women's Resource Center. Fox, retired Michigan State University Professor of American Thought and Language, talks about his life, his youth as an only child, his affliction with polio, and his strict Catholic education. He describes his eclectic interests in literature and Peruvian archeology, his conversion to Judaism, and his prolific writings. Fox reads short passages from a number of his works, both in English and Spanish. He weaves in stories of his mother and father, academic life, wives and lovers, and literary associates. Fox is introduced by MSU Librarian Peter Berg for the 10th anniversary session of the Michigan State University Libraries' Michigan Writers Series.
