- Description:
- Andrew Herod, professor of Geography at the University of Georgia, delivers a talk entitled, "Hammering against the reds: How that AFL-CIO fought communism in Latin America through urban planning." Herod talks about the relationship between the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) and the U.S. government in Latin America throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Herod says that the U.S. government used local labor unions to promote capitalism and democracy and to stop the spread of communism. Herod also says that democratic and capitalistic ideology was encouraged by the construction of social spaces such as housing units, schools, community centers which promoted social interaction. He answers questions from the audience. The event is convened by John P. Beck, Michigan State University professor of Human Resources and Labor Relations.

Pages are divided into alphabetically-tabbed sections, and street names have been written in. The actual records include a resident or owner's name, some numbers which may be the measurement of street frontage of the property, dates for "1st" and "2nd" (possibly taxes paid dates), and the legal description of each property. Pasted into the back of the book is a chart dated May 1, 1905, listing the six wards of the city and categories Stone, Plank, Brick, and Tar with totaled measurements.

- Description:
- An oversized ledger containing several sections mainly to do with permits, licenses, and bonds for installing signs, or moving or demolishing property in the Lansing vicinity. Entries often contain a permitting date and number, an address (from and to, when applicable), names of owner and contractor, the cost for permit, and building or sign dimensions and type. Everything in the ledger is written by hand, and due to ink types and page damage, some parts of the records are not readable. In some cases, such as large projects by the city or the state, a ledger sheet will list a number of homes not by address, and refer to a separate list or file. These lists and files were not part of the records transfer and may have been discarded by the City at some point. The sections of the ledger, which have been taken apart for digitization and alphabetized, are titled as follows: Approved Bonds (1948-1966) Approved Prefabricated Homes (1954) Bonds for House Moving (1953-1961) Deposits for Michigan Electric (1930) Deposits to Fire Department (1945-1961) Elevator Permits (1930-1946) House Moving Deposits to Michigan Bell Telephone Co. (1930-1961) House Moving Deposits to Board of Water & Light Commissioners (1930-1961) Moving Permits (1930-1963) Outdoor Sign & Advertising Licenses (1946-1958) Remittances on House Plans (1948) Renewal of Sign Hangers' Licenses - Bond Exp. (1948-1961) Sign Permits (1930-1965) Wrecking and Moving Licenses (1963-1968) Wrecking Permits (1961-1965) See the Child records below for links to each digitized section.
