- This is a general view of the prison camp at Ebersdorf bei Chemnitz which shows the POW barracks, the enclosed athletic field, and the camp fence. The Germans built this facility shortly before the war and incarcerated Allied prisoners here in 1914. Note the prisoners by the entrance of the building to the right.

- French orderlies pose with the patients in the hospital ward in the prison camp at Friedrichsfeld. All of the beds are filled with sick and wounded prisoners, but only one patient appears to be too ill to sit up in his bed.

- German, Russian, and French doctors stand on the steps of the front door of the hospital at the prison camp at Giessen. The Germans often captured Allied doctors who remained behind during a retreat to care for wounded war prisoners.

- Russian prisoners prepare to slaughter a cow in the butcher shop in the prison camp of Freistadt, under the supervision of an Austrian non-commissioned officer. Several sides of beef hang from the walls of the shop, ready to be cut up for cooking.

- This marks the official inauguration of the YMCA building in the prison camp in Wieselburg in 1916. Austrian officers and a visiting delegation stand in the center of the prison compound and Russian POW's stand at attention along the perimeter. The prison band is assembled on the perimeter to the left side of the photo. Wieselburg had over 5,000 permanently disabled prisoners in its ranks.

- Four Czechoslovak Legionnaires hang from trees at Sant Donna di Piave in Italy. Their crime was taking arms against their emperor in support of his enemies and to overthrow his empire by creating a new independent country.

- French officers receive their soup rations at the reprisal camp at Szczuezyn in Lithuania in 1916. Conditions in this camp were extremely harsh for the captives.

- This photograph shows an assortment of prison camp script and coins from Germany and Austria. All of the denominations are small (one to five Pfennige for German script from Chemnitz and Koenigstein-an-der-Elbe in Saxony and one to fifty Heller for Austrian script and coins from Freistadt and Kleinmuenchen), but this cash replaced legal currency to prevent prisoners from using the money to fund escape attempts or to bribe guards.

- German commandants allowed prisoners to publish prison camp newspapers to provide POW's with information about camp activities. This is a copy of the front page of "Le Journal du Camp d'Ohrdruf," the French language newspaper printed for French and Belgian prisoners at Ohrdruf (issue No. 11, 24 October 1915).

- French prisoners at Ohrdruf pass the time by playing a friendly game of lotto (bingo) out in the prison yard. Gambling was a serious vice, especially when men had a lot of free time on their hands and regulations attempted to eliminate high stakes gambling. Most POW's had few possessions after their capture, which limited gambling opportunities. Note the prisoner identification badges on the left breast of each POW.
