Seal; Karanis; Seals and sealings; Clay (unfired); Hermes

Notes:
Sealing: 3.6 x 2.3 cm; Impression: 1.4 x 1.0 cm; One complete, two partial impressions; good condition. Oval impression. Bust of Hermes to the right. Hermes head is entirely Hellenic and Periclean in concept. The facial features are very distinct: graceful chin line, full lips slightly parted, nose in good proportion descending in a nearly unbroken plane from a well-drawn eyebrow. Hermes hair is very short and curly, unbound, conically. The drapery of the bust is very finely drawn with a V-neck; the right shoulder is exposed. Over the right shoulder in back of the head, a slender palm frond projects vertically. Over the left shoulder, in front of the head, there is an upright cadaceus, which may be winged.
