Karanis; Textiles; Wool

Notes:
Fragment of woven wool fabric with yellowed warp, remnants of two green weft bands at either edge after which there are two discontinuous tapestry bands with a weft twining row between. The green weft bands are at each end. 1.6 cm from the larger green band there is a red band, 2.5 cm long x 0.3 cm wide. At the raw edge there are 14 picks of red. This is decreased to 8 picks at the dove-tail end. 2.2 cm from the red band there is a purple divided band, 3.9 cm long x 0.4 cm wide. 2 picks of yellow go down the center. One half of the band has 14 picks, the other half has 15 picks. Both of these bands are dove-tailed with yellow weft. 2.5 cm from this divided band is a short row of countered weft-twining, 2.8 cm long. The twining loops pass over 2 warps. Along the same edge as the discontinuous weft bands and the twining row there are three warp ribs. There are four warps in each rib. The fabric is damaged between part of the warp ribbing and the twining row, but some of the yarns are connected. There is one damaged stitch near the twining row.
