Mounted, sepia-toned photographic print depicting the construction of the Central Market Building in Campus Martius on Michigan Grand Avenue or Cadillac Square. Before it stands the Michigan Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, missing the eagle statues on its lowest pedestals. To the left of the Central Market building is McLennan and Company Dry Goods. On the opposite side is the Russell House, which also houses M. Horowitz and Company Crockery, and the Russell House Bazaar. A business advertising "wholesale liquors," is visible further down Cadillac. The photo is mounted on beige cardstock and has "1880" written on the verso.
