double spout oil lamp; Rome; Lamps; Ceramic; Slip; Zeus
- Notes:
- Buff clay with red-brown slip. Large lamp. Two rounded nozzles flanked by double volutes between which is a conventional design. Volutes do not encroach on rim which is a series of grooves and moldings with broad plain band on outside. On discus is bust of Zeus, front, wearing chiton and himation on both shoulders. Before him is eagle with wings spread, head to left, holding thunderbolt in talons. Ring handle with triangular attachment decorated with palmette and ornamented volutes below. Base ring set off by grooves. Lamp mended. Broken about wick hole. A little restoration, especially toward back and on handle, which has been removed.
