Camp Hobson

Description:
A view across a dirt road into a wooded area with several canvas tents, bicycles, a temporary wooden stage, and an American flag. A banner reads "Camp Hobson, U.S. Recruiting Service." This was likely a temporary recruiting station for the Spanish American War, named for Navy Lieutenant Richmond P. Hobson, who in June and July of 1898 was a prisoner of war in Cuba and had received a great deal of media attention following his intentional sinking of the U. S. S. Merrimac to obstruct a harbor entry. Note on sleeve: "No. 29. July 1, 1898. 3 pm. Snap shot medium. Opr. Al."
