Diploma, printed on heavy paper and mounted on linen, from the Detroit Training School in Elocution and English Literature, awarded in 1887. The text of the diploma reads as follows: "Detroit Training School in Elocution and English Literature This is to certify that Carrie Louise Rivard has passed the examination required by this School on a two years course of study in the Art of Reading, and is hereby honorably graduated." Underneath the text of the certificate is a banner reading "Non finis, sed initium." The seal of the Detroit Training School in Elocution and English Literature is to the bottom left. To the right of the seal are signatures from Edna Chaffee Noble, Director, and Emma J. Clark, Secretary. Text at bottom right reads "Given on the 24th day of May A.D. 1887. Abstract Building, Lafayette Ave. Detroit, Mich." Text at bottom left reads "Calvert Lith. Co. Detroit, Mich."
