Walls of Rome - Two Towers near the Lateran, one of Brick of Aurelian, AD 275, the other of Stone of the Wall of the Kings, BC 650. N.B. Some of the modern loopholes here and in other parts of the walls were made by the Roman citizens to defend themselves against the French army in 1848. Others by the Pontifical army in 1868 to defend themselves against the Garibaldians. Both of these lines of loopholes show the height of the earth inside of the wall as compared to the outside, a difference of level of from ten to twenty feet.; Rome; Photographs and prints; Cardboard
