One agreement, dated March 1, 1865, made between Arouet Richmond, Frederick H. A. Backus, and Benjamin Barton Richmond of Detroit. The agreement is handwritten in black ink on both sides of a sheet of white linen paper that has light blue lines. It contains seven sections and indicates that the "Parties do hereby agree to enter into a copartnership under the name and firm of Richmond & Backus to carry on a business as book sellers and book binders in all its various branches in the City of Detroit ..... for a period of (5) five years consecutively from the date these presents." The three parties have signed their names at the end of the agreement in the presence of two witnesses, "James Moreton" and "N. M. Macalister."
