Johnson Family Collection

Description:
This small collection contains items owned by Cory Ellsworth Johnson and Major Stickney Johnson, with information on the items provided by the donor. Materials include autograph albums with small items enclosed; documents from the First National Bank of Lansing Business College, the Interlake Business College, the Lansing Artificial Stone Co., A. D. Hensel, and Hall Lumber Company; a reprint of a Charles Dickens essay; a calligrapher's eraser; a monogram "J" for sealing wax; and an F. N. Arbaugh charge plate for Mrs. Richard Frazier. The collection also contains four early photographs. Two (circa 1886) are of the Interlake Business College building at the northeast corner of Washtenaw and Washington streets, which was operated by Professor William A. Johnson. This building also housed the L. D. Goss Furniture Store, the Lansing Music Co. Ltd., McCall's Bazar, Lansing Ice Co., the One Price Shoe Store, and other businesses. One of the photographs is one of few known images of horse-drawn streetcars in Lansing. A portrait of "Grandma Johnson" from the Savigny & Christmas studio, as well as a photo of Major Johnson, his mother, and their dog Jess at their farm house, are also included.
