- A letter from Ralph Emery, a clerk working for the Detroit Stove Works, to his father, Robert T. Emery, in Belfast, Maine, dated November 26, 1886. The letter is written on Detroit Stove Works letterhead, which features a lithograph, credited to the Calvert Lithograph Company, depicting the Detroit Stove Works offices in Detroit and Chicago as well as the company's foundry in Hamtramck, Michigan. The letter reads: My dear Father, I suppose Thanksgiving passed off as quietly as usual in Belfast, it was very quite here, was at the office most of the day. Have you any sleighing yet, we have had no snow at all although I see by the papers that East + West of me they have had fearful snow storms. We shall shut the works down on account of the Funeral of Francis Palms, who is President of the Michigan Stove Co. Mr. Palms was the richest man in this state - lives opposite where I board. His daughter is the lady who Senator Jones of Florida - + about whom the papers have had so much to say. At present Jones + his son are both here. The Senator has not been outside of Detroit except for a day to some place within 60 miles - for over a year. He has not been near Washington for much over a year but boards at the Russell House + draws his salary same as if he was in Washington all the time - People here think him somewhat out of his head. Have just returned from Mr. Palms funeral, it is the first Catholic funeral I have ever attended + was on a very grand scale - all the Stove Works turned out + the men made a big show. Notice by the Paper that the contract for supplying Belfast with water has been given to Boston parties. Hope you are well + that I shall hear from you soon. With my kindest regards to all. - Sixth card of a six trade card set from the Michigan Stove Company advertising Garland Stoves and Ranges, entitled "Before & After Marriage In Five Acts," drawn by Cassius M. Coolidge and copyrighted by George M. Hayes. On the recto is an image of a man in a black and white checkered shirt with a black top hat resting his head on his left arm with his back facing the viewer and his right arm resting on the back of his hip. In the lower left corner of the recto is an image of a woman in a tan dress chasing someone, of whom only a single leg in mid-run is seen, while brandishing a broom and yelling. The card's title, "Married Five Years," is printed in the bottom right corner of the recto. Printed on the verso is damaged advertising copy stating "With five years passed away, this [...] sees the mistake of a day. A s[...] lesson he has been taught, and has since a Garland bought. Those who have marriage in view, should not fail to likewise do."

Blank lines have been completed in handwritten black text. The text indicated that the parties of the first part were leasing rooms in a building located at 183 Jefferson Avenue, to the parties of the second part for two years for a total amount of $400.00. All parties have signed their names at the end of the lease agreement in the presence of two witnesses, "N. North Nay" and "Ignatz Freund."

The note terms indicated that "Two years from date, we promise to pay to the order of Richmond & Backus, One Hundred Thirty Five & 27/100 Dollars, with interest at the rate of two percent per annum at T. J. Rand's Bank, Muskegon, Mich., Value received - S. D. Murray, Wm. J. Murray." A ten-cent U.S. Internal Revenue stamp has been affixed to the left side of the note and has black handwritten text that reads "Apr. 6, 1869." The stamp features a blue and white engraved design with a bust of George Washington at the center.

The front cover features the header "Quotations," followed by the logo for Bloomgarden and Ellenstein. Underneath the logo and company name is a list of fruits and produce, including peaches, pears, plums, grapes, apples, and melons. The Office and Warehouse location is listed as "44 Griswold Street Detroit Michigan." Text underneath the address reads "These quotations are issued in the interest of shippers of all kinds of fruit with prices made from actual sales on day of issue, which date will be found on the next page." At the bottom of the cover is text reading "References: Peoples Savings Bank Detroit. Dun's and Bradstreets Mercantile Agency. Any Jobbing House in Detroit." The back cover features a note from Bloomgard and Ellenstein reading as follows: "We will breifly [sic] state that this season we consider ourselves in a position to handle your shipments with the best results obtainable. Our location being prominent with easy access to all railroad and boat lines and at the entrance of our main market street where all dealers in this line must pass the secret of heavy sales is to have heavy receipts which will all ways bring the best prices. To obtain these results for your benefit as well as our own we suggest that you make good shipments every day as prices will naturally vary and in having your shipments on the market regular you are sure to catch the high prices when they come which is enough invariably to more than cover any difference in low prices which may chance to take place. Look to us for your success this season and you will be pleased with our judgment and system of doing business.
