- Keith Taylor, coordinator of the undergraduate creative writing program at the University of Michigan, reads poetry from a new manuscript just sent to his publisher and scheduled to be published in 2009. Taylor says that he writes about his experiences with Michigan's places and people and attempts to capture the daily patterns, habits, aspirations and dreams of those around him. He also reads from the following: "Battered guitars: the poetry and prose of Kostas Karyotakis", "And the waters prevailed", "What's needed now", and "The walk." He concludes by reading three short love poems and then answers questions from the audience. Taylor is introduced by MSU Librarian Peter Berg. - Jaimy Gordon, professor of creative writing at Western Michigan University, and author of "She drove without stopping" and the underground fantasy classic, "Shamp of the city-solo", reads from her novel in progress, "Lord of misrule". She explains the horse racing and track setting of the novel, its premise and characters. Gordon answers questions about how her writing technique, writing about familiar things and her own experiences working at the track as a young woman. She recommends working before going to graduate school, suggesting that it gives young writers something to write about.
