- Resolution printed on a large piece of cardstock, from the Board of Trustees honoring James R. Elliott upon his retirement. The document has an ornate header consisting of the letters "FFA," surrounded by vines, and a firefighter's bugle. The resolution reads: Detroit, Mich. May 1st 1896. At a meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Detroit Firemen's Fund Association, held April 9th 1896, the retiring board adopted the following set of resolutions. Whereas, James R. Elliott has been an active member of this Board since its inception and taken great interest in the affairs of the Firemen's Fund Association and Whereas, we the members of the Board desire to show our appreciation to him for the conspicuous service has so freely rendered, and Whereas, the preservation of this Organization has been largely due to the wise methods he has inaugurated. Be it therefore resolved, that we the members of the retiring Board extend to our retiring Treasurer, James R. Elliott, our sincerest thanks and heartiest commendation for his invaluable services, and Be it further resolved, that this set of Resolutions be engrossed suitably framed, and presented to Chief James R. The document bears the signatures of President Jerome Croul, Treasurer Alexander Paton, and Secretary Benjamin Vernor, beside a silver embossed Fire Department of the City of Detroit seal. Hand-colored illustrations of uniformed firefighters, an early fire apparatus and firefighting equipment, the seal of the State of Michigan, and Neptune flanked by two winged monsters are bordered by scrollwork. The number "12" has been added to the helmets of the firefighters and to the apparatus, likely indicating Specht's involvement in Woodbridge Fire Company No. 12. "Great grand father of Daneil Murray Embach," has been handwritten in the lower left corner.

- Detroit Fire Department active duty certificate, engraved by Capewell and Kimmel, and issued to John McDuff on April 24, 1858. The document bears the signatures of President Robert E. Roberts, Treasurer Alexander Paton, and Secretary Benjamin Vernor, as well as the signing date, March 15, 1858, beside a blue embossed Fire Department of the City of Detroit seal. Hand-colored illustrations of uniformed firefighters, firefighting equipment, the seal of the State of Michigan, and Neptune flanked by two winged monsters are bordered by scrollwork. The number "4" has been added to the helmets of the firefighters and to the apparatus, indicating McDuff's involvement in Lafayette Fire Company No. 4. "When danger calls we are prompt to fly / and bravely do or bravely die," has been handwritten around the upper arc of the large central circular motif. Illustrations of the fire engine of Lafayette Company No. 4, another pair of early apparatuses, and a sepia-toned photograph of Lafayette Company No. 4's apparatus on Wayne Street in front of their fire station near Larned Street, are pasted onto the certificate.

- Running book used by Martin Cooney, Superintendent of Horses for the Detroit Fire Department, as indicated by a handwritten note on the inside cover. The first page contains regulations concerning the answering of fire alarms from Chief James Broderick, dated February 1, 1902. The book contains nine sections, each corresponding to a numbered tab. Each page contains a ledger with the number and cross streets of the city's fire alarms, along with fields for recording the number of the engine company, ladder company, hose company, water tower company, supply company, and number of officers to respond to each. The book is bound in black cloth-covered cover, with faint handwriting in pencil along the edge adjacent to the spine. A hole has been made through the book at the upper left corner.

- Sepia-toned albumen photo of the Firemen's Memorial in Elmwood Cemetery. The Memorial consists of a round white stone column (probably marble) that is mounted on an ornate carved, 4-sided white stone base. A carved figure of a fireman, who is shown with a downcast gaze, is standing on top of the column. The front of the base shows a raised carving of a fireman's helmet and the lettering, "Firemen." A planted flower bed occupies the area around the monument base. Also, there are two large flower urns on each side of the monument. Several ornamental fire hydrants are visible in the foreground and gravestones can be seen in the area beyond the flower bed.

The men are identified on a separate copy of this photo (1955.158.001), from left to right as, Pete Ortwine, Max Worth, Charles Little (seated on the driver's bench of the fire engine), Peter Smith, Frank Kelliger, Dan Carroll, Billy Werner, Ted Dnier (seated on the driver's bench of the hose apparatus), and Jim O'Grady. Most of the men are in uniforms consisting of helmets, broad belts, and matching shirts and pants, however the three men nearest to the fire engine and the driver of the hose apparatus wear matching coats, and peaked caps. Henry Miller, a police officer, stands on the far right wearing a broad-brimmed hat, and a coat with a badge on it. Five other figures stand in the station's look-out tower, and several other bystanders are in the background at street level. The photo is mounted on beige cardstock. "Harry J. - Large sepia-toned photograph of Detroit Fire Department Chief James C. Broderick and driver George Appel, seated in an Oldsmobile Autocrat, which is parked on a brick street, beside a brick wall. "DFD" is painted on the car's door. The photo is mounted on cardstock. A typewritten caption affixed to the verso reads: Chief James Broderick, pictured here in the driver's seat of an early motorized chief's car, served in Detroit's Fire Department for fifty continuous years. He was one of the few men who witnessed the passing from the hand engines to steam engines and from the steam engines to gasoline motor-driven apparatus. He saw the department grow from a small group of volunteers to a department of over 1,700 men. His first big fire after taking charge of the Fire Department was the spectacular Michigan Stove Works fire, which occurred on January 8, 1907, one week after he became Chief. The biggest fire in Chief Broderick's time was the D.M. Ferry Seed Company fire on New Year's Day, 1886, with a loss of a million dollars, a huge sum in those days.

The booklet consists of a half-folded sheet bound with blue string ending in a brown tassel into a half-folded cover--since torn at the crease--with a color illustration of a firefighter using a hose, while another firefighter runs holding an ax and a hook in the background on the front, and a fire hydrant on the back. The program of dances to be performed as well as the list of committee members are contained within. The program was printed by Watko and Dietz at 690 Gratiot Avenue.

It shows the sterling qualities and abilities of the man, his faithful performance of duty and his rugged honest of purpose. No one can make such a record without possessing all the qualities which go to make up a brave, strong man. It is such me who furnish the stability of our service and make our Department a credit to our beautiful city. In granting the request of Chief Kendall for retirement, the Commission yields to a physical necessity. We feel that we have lost a loyal member of the Department, and that our City will miss a faithful public servant.
