- Woman's blue wool knit dress; shift style with hidden elastic waist, boat neckline, and cap sleeves. The dress has white, ribbon top knit stripes 1/4" wide in groups of four, running horizontally down the length of the dress. The 1" hem is secured with a stockinet stitch. One of the first knit dreses imported from Italy.

2. Women's suit with divided skirt and matching jacket of tan linen from the early twentieth century
- Description:
- A woman's suit that consists of divided skirt and matching jacket of tan linen. The tailored suit has a long jacket with four buttons in front, and two buttons on the cuff of each sleeve. The skirt has eleven buttons on the panel that conceals the pants, and a separate belt. Note: Helen Andrus Merrell Howard, daughter of Dr. Frank D. Howard, married Francis (C.or E.)Merrell c. 1908, and moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico. Original records call this a bicycling suit, but it might have been worn as a riding habit while out west. She later returned to Detroit.

- This two piece dress may have been worn as a wedding gown or was part of a trousseau. It is made of gold-color silk satin, and the bodice is boned with deep points front and back. It has a laced center front closing with elbow length sleeves. The deep "U" neckline is filled with ecru lace and embroidered net, and has fringed ruching. There is lace around bottom of the bodice and at the sleeves. The bustle-back skirt has a very long train with irregular pleats. The front hem has pleated, up-turned curves. The dress has a draped panel at its left side, and is lined with buckram. There is a hook-and-eye closure at the waist. The bodice is labeled Newcomb Endicott, Detroit. It was possibly worn by Kate Bock of Battle Creek, who married George W. Tanner of Indianapolis, October 2, 1882.

There is a stiff net nylon underskirt attached. It has a matching waist length jacket with three self-buttons down the front. The jacket sleeves are elbow-length. Label: "Scassi". - Woman's A-line dress is made of paper with a design depicting the telephone yellow pages. The collar has a bow at the center front, and the armholes are bound in black cloth tape. There are no fitting darts or fasteners. Worn by donor while pregnant with her first child, it was very comfortable. Label: Waste Basket Boutique, by Mars of Ashville, NC, Do Not Wash. This material is fire resistant unless washed or dry cleaned, then becomes dangerously flamable when dry.

- This woman's two-piece tan silk shantung dress has a skirt with a gathered side pannier. The dress is trimmed with brown faille, and the curaisse bodice has brown faille trim. It has brown panel in front with a large brown and tan bow, and streamers in back. Its sleeves are finished with a lace-edged white ruffle. The dress is lined. Note: Coat with hood 1950.001.011 matches the dress. See also matching parasol 1950.001.101. Note: Two pieces from trousseau of Della Miles Bertch, born c. 1870. Accession records spell donor's name 3 different ways, but US Census records always use Fredrika.

- Woman's dress in a fine red wool, trimmed with red velvet and white lace. The bodice, with a back closure, is draped and crosses in front like a loose jacket. It is edged with velvet that forms a rosette. A dicky of multi-colored beads with gold lace over red and turquoise. The oversleeves reach to the elbows, and wrist length undersleeves are of white lace. Cuffs of the beads similar to those on the dicky. The high waisted skirt flares slightly, and appears to open down the side, closes with rosettes.

- Woman's rayon daydress having an off-white and brown leaf print pattern. The machine-sewn chemise has short sleeves, and a mock shawl surplice neckline of off-white rayon. Its skirt has a double pleat at the left center-front, and a single pleat at the center back. A self belt is set in the right side seam. Self bows at the tops of the sleeves. Worn by the donor's mother. Mass market, possibly mail order.

- Woman's crepe-backed satin, below knee-length cocktail dress in olive green with loops of pink. A small sequin centers each of the loops. The bodice has short sleeves, a high round neck with a slight turn-over at the throat, and a slit down the center front that is fastened with a hook and loop. The back is draped, and has a cut out from the nape to shoulder blades. The natural waist has a waistband, and the skirt and bodice are gathered so as to appear to tie in the center front. The skirt is fairly straight and has a side zipper. Labels: "Hattie Carnegie" and "Stanley Korshak, Chicago."

- This woman's one piece, blue silk taffeta dress has a pattern of tiny blue and white checks. The garment has a fitted bodice that buttons down front, and its buttons are covered by a panel of pleated blue iridescent taffeta. A band of embroidered iridescent blue taffeta, having a peacock-tail design, is edged with maroon around the back-neck, and over the shoulders. The front forms a V-shaped waist that separates toward the hips. The same material and pattern are around the cuffs of the long sleeves. The dress has a high neck with mandarin- like collar that is edged with tulle. The skirt front is of solidly pleated blue iridescent taffeta. It has a wide pleated drape of same material around the skirt at the hip line, and two ruffles at its bottom are under ruffles of maroon. Bows of blue taffeta, with blue fringed edges, are around the skirt's bottom. The back of the skirt is blue checked taffeta (same as bodice) that is gathered to form a bustle. There is a large bow of maroon grosgrain ribbon in back. The dress is entirely lined.

- Description:
- Woman's coat and dress evening ensemble of black and white floral print satin clocque. The floor length coat has a round neckline without a closing. The sleeves are pleated at the shoulder, then fall kimono-like to a three quarter length. The coat is seamed up the center back, and lined with acetate. The floor length dress has a fitted camisole bodice with spaghetti straps seed beads and dangling pendant beads. It zips down the back. The ensemble has a Ruth Joyce label.

- This re-embroidered cloque evening dress with stole has a silvery white ground with geometric padded areas outlined with silver thread. The sleeveless dress of just below knee length is princess-cut. It has a cowl neck in front continuing to a deep "V" in the back. There are pockets hidden in the front side seams. The snap closing in back is ornamented with a large self pompom. The dress is lined in white silk. The stole falls over the shoulder to hem length and the folds are tacked down to give it shape. "Ruth Joyce" is embroidered on the underside. Designed by Ruth Joyce.

- This two piece, dark purple taffeta woman's dress is trimmed with purple velvet. The bodice has a basque waist, and buttons down the front with thirteen cut white and smoke pearl buttons. It has velvet lapels, and a loose back shoulder yoke and tab across front opening just below lapels. Its velvet sleeves are trimmed with bands of taffeta, and have ruching at the cuffs. An additional row of pleated white silk ruching is also at the cuff. The back has a longer center peplum effect ending in a large flat bow. The bodice is lined with a tan cotton. The skirt's fabric matches that of the bodice. The skirt has an elaborately draped and gathered bustle. The skirt has a foundation of sheer wool fabric, possibly bombazine, that the trims are attached to. (The foundation is not a lining.) It has a long train, a dust ruffle of pleated white cotton edged with lace, and a brown cambric lining. Note: Probably belonged to Mrs. Charles Ducharme, grandmother of donor.

The skirt is straight with a single pleat at the side front. There is a side zipper. Label: "Philip Hulitar." The matching sleeveless jacket with horizontal stripes of alternating aqua, green and dark blue, connected with faggotting, fitted by long darts at the waist, and has a side closing. - Woman's evening gown having a white net bodice over pink slip. It has a high collar, elbow-length sleeves, panels of net with gilt-thread floral border over the shoulders, and rhinestone trim. Its skirt of pale pink daisy-brocaded satin has vertical chains of gilt-thread daisies. Its empire waist is straight, and slightly draped at the sides and back, and has a short train. It is enhanced with gilt buckles having beaded fringe hanging at front and side skirt drapes. Label: B.A. Krenz, Detroit. The dress belonged to the donor's mother, Mrs. James R. Hayes. Mr. Hayes was the proprietor of the Wayne Hotel from the 1880s to 1918. The dress was made by Bertha A. Krenz whose shop was on High Street (Vernor).

- This woman's dark green wool day dress has two pieces, and its collar, cuffs, waistband, and front of bodice are made of paisley-patterned wool. The lower portion of skirt has a matching paisley pattern. Worn by Miss Esther Brown, cousin of donor's mother. Miss Brown was born in 1846. Donor's mother was the daughter of tobacco manufacturer and Michigan Governor J.J. Bagley.

- This women's gray wool shirtwaist has a round, notched collar. Its center closing has four gray buttons, and cuffed, bracelet length dolman sleeves with a gusset under the arm. The skirt is cut on the bias, and is mid-calf in length. It has a peg-top, and a center zipper closing, with two darts front and back. A stiff self belt with buckle covered in mottled gray kid is lined with brown leather. The dress was worn by donor, a buyer for Hudson's, and was made by Irene of California.

- Woman's coat and dress ensemble in a medium brown wool jersey that is piped with white leather. The knee-length coat is double breasted, and is fairly straight with a seamed dropped waistline, and straight bracelet length sleeves. It has a small round collar, edged in white leather, and eight white leather buttons down the front with buttonholes that are bound in leather. The coat has a matching crepe lining. The dress is made of the same fabric with a close round neck, and short sleeves. The sheath dress has a seamed dropped waist in the front panel only, and has two white leather buttons just above. Back zipper. Label: "Schrader Knits" and "Int. Ladies Garment Workers Union, Union Made, AFL-CIO, ILGWU."

- Woman's bright tangerine-color, ankle length evening gown. The flowing, sarong-style dress has assymetrical straps. It has a closing, and fullness at the right front with horizontal draping over the bust with a complex front snap closing. An underdress of tangerine chiffon over crepe has staying, and a concealed zipper. The gown is slit below the knee on the right side. Fullness on the right side flutters open to reveal the underdress. The dress was worn by the daughter of Norah Dingler to her Senior prom. She was a student at Shrine High School. It was purchased at Julie's in the Fisher Building for $700.00. Label: Ferdinando Sarmi.

- Woman's cream wool crepe, one piece dress. The garment has a V-neck of ecru net, long fitted sleeves, a waistline that is slightly above normal, and a pleated but narrow skirt. It also has an ecru lace collar, and a bodice pleat that extends from center front over the shoulder, and down the center back side. A cross over closure on the center front side is trimmed with a band of multicolored embroidery at thewaist is edged with pink grosgrain ribbon. A peplum of crepe and multicolored embroidery starts at the hip and extends around the back and ends at the other hip.

It buttons down the front, and is cut-away with a short tail in the back. The skirt (b) is very long and full, and is gathered at the waist in large pleats. It has a black cloth waistband. The black felt hat (c) has a round crown with a narrow visor in the front. It has a band of black grosgrain ribbon, and is lined with pinkish-red satin. Label (hat): 1862 Non Pareil, size 6 5/8.

There are large rhinestones and silver beads at the neckline and cuffs. There is a back zipper closure. Label: "DESIGNED BY SARMI, NEW YORK," and "BONWIT TELLER." Worn by Mrs. Helen Milliken at 1970 and 1974 inaugural balls, her husband was the governor of Michigan from 1969 to 1983. He had previously served as Michigan's Lieutenant Governor from 1965 to 1969 .

- This navy crepe women's maternity dress has long sleeves with cuffs, is gathered at the waist by an elastic and has navy blue floss embroidered trim. The top is collarless in front and has an 8" collar in back. The dress is fastened by several sets of hooks and eyes around the waist band. The ankle length skirt has a flying panel at the front attached to a yoke band, and the peplum is attached at the back. There is a 24" band around the waist which hooks under the flying panel in front.

- Women's brown velvet dress with long, reddish-gold lame sleeves having velvet cuffs. Sleeves are very full and smocked at top. Small stand-up collar ending in two long ribbons in front (brown velvet on one side and gold lame on other) that tie in a bow at front of neck. A sash of velvet and gold lame is fastened at the sides. The dress ties in back, and has a small dickie of lame snaps across opening at neck. The dress does not have a label. - Woman's two piece afternoon dress in dark royal blue velvet. The dress has an oval neckline outlined with iridescent dark blue beads, and an elaborate bib-type ornament in front. It has an un-beaded back, and short sleeves. The waist-length jacket is of matching fabric, and has three quarter length sleeves with turn-back cuffs. Has matching purse #68.259.001. Worn by donor at the affair honoring her husband's appointment to the United Nations in 1954.

- This "A" line, wool jersey woman's dress (of about knee length) has a black and white herringbone pattern with large black and white flowers applied. The short sleeves are cut in one with the dress. The high, round neck is closed by a back zipper. There is a 7" slit in the left side hem. It has a wide lace collar or ruffle with a scalloped edge which covers the bodice front and back. The plain, flared skirt is ankle length. It has a wide suede belt covered by the same ecru lace, with a rhinestone buckle. There is a loose, waist length jacket with short sleeves having wide mink fur cuffs. - This woman's ensemble has a dress made of crepon with a geometric design of orange, green, purple, fuschia and white. Natural waistline. Wrist- length sleeves with light shoulder pads and two button cuffs. It buttons to the waist and has a side zipper. The U-shaped neckline is trimmed with a self ruffle. The skirt has 1/2" pleats sewn down 10". Knee length. There is a 1/4" wide self belt. It hs a matching purple, velveteen hip-length woman's jacket with lapels faced with the same lining material as the dress and long has fitted sleeves. There is a one button closing and a 1 1/2" wide self belt. The belt has a brass buckle. The jacket has patch pockets on either side. - Woman's two piece evening gown made of white alaskin. (A stiff, dull fabric, possibly part wool.) The bodice is tailored like a man's jacket or vest except that it has a high round neck. It is single breasted with four decorative buttons of white braid with a white drop bead in the center. The neckline and pocket flaps are also edged with rows of white braid and beads. The floor-length, straight skirt has two rows of braid and beads at the hem and an elaborate kick-pleat in the back. Both pieces are lined with white acetate. Worn by donor. Designed by Ruth Joyce. The skirt has three layers of black and blue tulle over satin, and its hem is a band of gold thread embroidery. The dress has a blue satin sash with stays, and a back closure. - This woman's, yellow silk crepe dress has a convertible collar, and a "V" throat that fastens with eleven small pearl buttons and self-fabric loops. The sleeves are fastened at the cuff with two small pearl buttons and self fabric loops. The cuffs are trimmed with a hand-embroidered design of abstract flowers, leaves, and scrolls in various colors of silk floss. A similiar decoration trims the front of the dress top around the neck opening, and at the center front. The skirt has fine accordion pleats, and the hip line is trimmed with smocking in different colors of silk floss. The dress does not have a label.

Fabric folded over hips to suggest panniers, and the skirt is pleated in the center back. Back zipper closure. The bodice is boned, and lined with black acetate. The gown's skirt has knee length black ninon underskirt-stiffened with a wide horsehair braid. Label: Julie Inc, Fisher Bldg. Detroit. Donor identifies it as a Norman Norell. It has been let out professionally at side and back seams. Donor also indicated that it had a train which was removed because she is not very tall.
