- Photograph. Glossy black and white photo of 1922 Ahrens-Fox High Pressure Apparatus car. The car has been photographed in the middle of a street. Several wood frame and brick houses are visible in the background. A typewritten label at the bottom of the photo notes "Ahrens Fox high pressure car in the Detroit, Michigan, fire dept." and the number, "602," is shown in the lower right corner. A typewritten label on the verso notes "1922 Ahrens-Fox High Pressure Apparatus; This apparatus was used with the old high pressure hydrant system in downtown Detroit. This truck was originally designated as High Pressure No. 1 located at Wayne and Larned Sts. and is still in service today as a reserve boat tender for the fireboat. Photo courtesy of C. Woodward." A handwritten note on the verso suggests that the subject is Detroit Fire Department chief James Battle, however he does not resemble Battle in portraits taken later in his life. A Grelling and Company stamp is impressed near the bottom of the image.
