Shafarman also talks about his life before coming to the Lansing, MI area in 1969, mass production techniques in the auto industry, bad working conditions in the early car factories, Henry Ford’s hiring and pay practices, corporate paternalism, and the "novel" idea of paying workers enough to afford to buy the products they built. - Bill Faunce, professor emeritus of the Michigan State University Department of Sociology, talks about his youth, education, and what brought him to MSU in 1957 to teach industrial sociology and work in the Center for Labor and Industrial Relations which later became known as the School of Labor and Industrial Relations (SLIR). Faunce also talks about his research, the structure of SLIR, the mission of the school, working in an auto plant in his younger days, and coordinating the school's move from the basement of Marshall Hall to South Kedzie Hall. Faunce is interviewed by John Revitte, MSU professor of Labor and Industrial Relations.
