2. British POW Graves in the Cemetery at Limburg

Notes:
Three fresh British graves stand in the New Cemetery at Limburg. The crosses bear the prisoners' names, their birth dates, and the dates of their deaths. POW's arrived in prison camps with wounds and illnesses which sometimes led to their death in captivity.

3. Irish Catholic Communion Service at Limburg

Notes:
Irish prisoners at Limburg receive communion during an outdoor Roman Catholic service. The altar stands behind the priests as they administer the sacrament. The German established a propaganda camp at Limburg for Irish Catholics in an effort to recruit volunteers for the Irish Legion, a force that would invade Ireland to free the island from British rule. Irish POW's received special privileges as an enticement to fight for their freedom.

4. Canteen at Limburg

Notes:
French prisoners of war line up for additional food and provisions outside the window of the camp canteen at Limburg. One French soldier, in the line to the left, proudly wears two medals on his chest, while a German non-commissioned officer stands to the right. These prisoners could make their purchases using their prison script (Lagergeld) which they received for their work assignments or from their savings in the prison camp bank.

5. Showers at Limburg

Notes:
Prisoners of war take showers at Limburg; the ever present German guard stands in the center background. The picture is staged; the prisoners do not appear to have any soap and are modestly dressed for the photograph. However, weekly showers were important to maintain healthy conditions inside prison camps and German authorities would close showers and baths as a form of punishment for captives.

8. Workshop at Limburg

Notes:
French cobblers and tailors work on repairing shoes and clothing in a work shop at Limburg. A German non-commissioned officer oversees the work from the back of the room. The prisoners provided most of the labor needed to keep the prison camp running smoothly and efficiently. Some POW's became apprentices and learned a trade working in such workshops during the war.

9. Disinfection Station at Limburg

Notes:
A prisoner and a German soldier remove clean bedding from a disinfection machine in the prison camp at Limburg. These clothes have been fumigated and are safe to return to their owners, now that they are free of vermin which might have spread disease in the camp.

10. Camp Kitchen at Limburg

Notes:
A French officer tastes the day's soup in the camp kitchen at Limburg, as Russian and German cooks prepare for the distribution of the meal to the prisoners. Feeding all of the men in a prison camp on a daily basis was a massive undertaking in spite of wartime food shortages.
