- This is a scrapbook from the Ingham County Council of Parents and Teachers, which features individual sections on several schools throughout the county. For each school there is at least one photograph and an essay about the history of the parent-teacher association, an annual handbook, and/or other information about the activities of the association. - Located at 1028 Barnes Avenue West. Barnes Elementary was constructed in 1919 as a five room building on the corner of Barnes Avenue and Logan Street. It opened in September 1919 and an addition was made in summer of 1920. The school sat on 2.25 acres and had a capacity of 410. Contents: Yearly histories compiled by the PTA, meeting minutes, financial reports, membership materials, other PTA records and scrapbooks.

- Gilberto V. Martinez describes his life as a migrant worker traveling with his family between Texas and Wisconsin. Martinez talks about moving from school to school, working the farm, and getting involved with PASSO (Political Association of Spanish-speaking Organizations) to politically empower Mexican Americans in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He describes raising money to pay the Texas poll tax, finding candidates, those candidates being fired when they were elected, and merchants refusing to sell to the new Chicano officials. Martinez also describes coming to Michigan, enrolling at Michigan State University, and continuing as a community activist. Interviewers are Michigan State University Professor Dionicio N. Valdés and MSU Librarian Diana H. Rivera.
