Mackey talks about his efforts to maintain the authority of the MSU Board of Trustees and planning the Breslin Center while president and his time as an economics professor since he left the presidency. Mackey also reminisces about his early career as counsel for the Senate Antitrust Subcommittee and the Department of Transportation, as well as his early posts as President of the University of South Florida and Texas Tech. Mackey says that military conscription in both World War II and the Korean War had a definite impact on his education and discusses his opinions on the current state of higher education. Mackey is interviewed by retired MSU Professor Pauline Adams for the Michigan State University Faculty Emeriti Oral History Project.

Once sworn in, President Obama speaks to the estimated 1.8 million spectators. Obama highlights on the challenges the nation faces in the economy and war, saying that we all have a duty to ourselves, the nation, and the world. - Don Stevens, former Michigan State University trustee and AFL-CIO board member, reminisces about his childhood, family, farming, his early education, and his experiences with labor unions and union organizing. Stevens talks about his early work life, hearing about unions during the auto sit-down strikes in 1936 and 1937, listening to radio preachers condemn unions, and failed attempts to unionize a laundry where he worked and later success in organizing dairy and retail workers in the Grand Rapids area in the 1940s. Stevens also discusses CIO leadership during the war, union political efforts regarding health and safety, unemployment insurance, higher wages, and seniority rights and his own involvement in the growing union movement and labor organizing. - Dr. Steven Alan Carr delivers a lecture entitled, "Hollywood, the Holocaust, and the Crisis Over Propaganda," as part of the fifth annual Esther and George Kessler Lecture on Jewish Film and Media. Using rare multimedia excerpts of films, speeches, industry memos and copies of original Hollywood publicity, Carr demonstrates how the concept of propaganda became a lightning rod for debates over the so-called Jewish control of the media, especially in Hollywood. He also says that this fear of Jewish control often lead to the depiction of World War II as essentially a Jewish war in which America had no business intervening. Carr is introduced by Dr. Kenneth Waltzer, Director of the Michigan State University Jewish Studies Program. Carr answers questions from the audience. Obama reiterates his position that cuts can be made if some revenue is raised. He identifies areas in defense and some ways to restructure Social Security and Medicare that would help stabilize spending over the long term. - The only known recording of President Benjamin Harrison presumably made years after his presidency by Giuseppe Bettini, sometime between 1894 and 1899. This modern recording features a narrator explaining how Harrison's voice was recorded and features the 1814 campaign song of Harrison's grandfather "Old Tippecanoe," President William Henry Harrison, which was resurrected for Benjamin's 1888 campaign. The Library of Congress says only one copy of the recording has been found and is located at the Benjamin Harrison Memorial Home and this recording was made from that recording.
