- Dr. Ruben Martinez, director of the Julian Samora Research Institute at Michigan State University, and MSU professor Daniel Vélez Ortiz, deliver a talk entitled "Latino auto workers : from the margin to the core." Martinez describes their research project which looks at auto workers of Latino heritage, their transition from migrant and seasonal work to industrial jobs, and the dramatic rise in their standard of living. Ortiz talks about what brought Latinos to Michigan, their experiences, association with the United Auto Workers, participation in the Flint Sit-down strike, how they maintained their cultural heritage, and how auto industry jobs came to successive generations. They answer questions from the audience. The speakers are introduced by MSU Professor John P. Beck. Part of the "Our Daily Work/Our Daily Lives" Brown Bag series sponsored by the MSU School of Human Resources and Labor Relations, the MSU Museum, and cosponsored by Chicano/Latino Studies, the Julian Samora Research Institute, and the Lansing Stewardship Community/Motorcities - The Automobile National Heritage Area. Obama talks about the success of the auto industry, which is creating jobs and making profits after nearly collapsing in 2008 and 2009. He talks about the values of hard work, education, and being frugal, touts the new fuel economy requirements and promises to make sure that foreign trade is fair, "because America always wins with the playing field is level."

- 8x10 black and white photograph from glass negative of mud-spattered 1905 Packard Model N with five males in goggles and work clothes. Inscribed on photo back: 4-cylinder, 28-horsepower, 106-inch wheelbase, 5-person touring car, non-standard "N" body. Note that the top edge of the body following line of the door for a distance aft of the door before curving up to follow the line of the rear seat, whereas this line on the standard "N" body curved up immediately aft of the tonneau door. Note: special spot light mounted on dash at left & resultant missing left side light. Doubtless the occupants were Packard personnel and were conducting a test run.

- Description:
- Doug Sleep talks about his career in the export department at REO Motor Car Company/Diamond-Reo Trucks, Inc., in Lansing, MI, from 1961 to 1975. Sleep talks about preparing trucks to be shipped for sale overseas, about becoming a UAW steward and the deterioration of worker/management relations when the company changed ownership. Sleep describes the difficulty in running a shop with the chronic shortage of parts in the company's last days and final owner Francis Cappaert's attempts to break the union. He also laments the loss of the worker pension fund and the creation of federal pension guarantee program. The interviewer is Shirley Bradley. The first minute of the interview was not recorded. Recorded as part of the commemoration of the REO Motor Car Company’s 100th Anniversary.
