Junttonen relates how Dett, of African-Canadian and African-American decent, attended Oberlin College in Ohio, toured the world teaching and composing and eventually settled in Battle Creek, Michigan. Junttonen plays selections of Dett's compositions and explains his influence on American music. She also describes Dett materials held in the MSU Archives and other collections.
