Both men are wearing workmen's overalls and hats. Based upon the position on the text, the man on the left is Mr. Porteous and the man on the right is Mr. Ulrich. Handrails and other track lines are visible in the background. The photo was probably taken at a Michigan Central railroad yard near Detroit.

One workman is standing behind the caisson and another is standing on the railroad tracks to the right. A temporary concrete mixing plant can be seen in the center background area along with construction materials and construction debris.

The view looks northward and shows several workmen who are constructing wooden forms on the trusses in order to contain the poured concrete that will create the counterweights. Two construction cranes can be seen in the background. The 2-story brick building for the bridge operator is visible at the far right side. The ground is lightly covered with snow.
