- Portrait of singer and actress Lena Horne. "Born in Brooklyn in 1917, Lena Horne became one of the most popular African American performers of the 1940s and 1950s ... she personifies both the glamour of Hollywood and the reality of a lifetime spent battling racial and social injustice, pushed by an ambitious mother into the chorus line of the Cotton Club when she was sixteen, and maneuvered into a film career by the N.A.A.C.P., she was the first African American signed to a long-term studio contract, in her rise beyond Hollywood’s racial stereotypes of maids, butlers, and African natives, she achieved true stardom on the silver screen, and became a catalyst for change even beyond the glittery fringes of studio life," from PBS American Masters website.

- Description:
- Portrait of legendary blues musician, B.B. King performing at the 1980 Montreux Detroit Jazz Festival. "Riley “B.B.” King has been called the “King of the Blues” and “Ambassador of the Blues,” and indeed he’s reigned across the decades as the genre’s most recognizable and influential artist, his half-century of success owes much to his hard work as a touring musician who consistently logged between 200 and 300 shows a year, through it all he’s remained faithful to the blues while keeping abreast of contemporary trends and deftly incorporating other favored forms - jazz and pop, for instance - into his musical overview ... as a guitarist, King is best-known for his single-note solos, played on a hollowbody Gibson guitar, King’s unique tone is velvety and regal, with a discernible sting, he’s known for his trilling vibrato, wicked string bends, and a judicious approach that makes every note count," from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum's website.

- Description:
- Portrait of singer, actor and political activist, Paul Robeson. "Paul Robeson was the epitome of the 20th-century Renaissance man, he was an exceptional athlete, actor, singer, cultural scholar, author, and political activist. His talents made him a revered man of his time, yet his radical political beliefs all but erased him from popular history ... born in 1898, Paul Robeson grew up in Princeton, New Jersey, his father had escaped slavery and become a Presbyterian minister, while his mother was from a distinguished Philadelphia family, at seventeen, he was given a scholarship to Rutgers University, where he received an unprecedented twelve major letters in four years and was his class valedictorian, after graduating he went on to Columbia University Law School, and, in the early 1920s, took a job with a New York law firm. Racial strife at the firm ended Robeson’s career as a lawyer early, but he was soon to find an appreciative home for his talents ... Robeson began to find work as an actor, in the mid-1920s he played the lead in Eugene O’Neill’s “All God’s Chillun Got Wings” (1924) and “The Emperor Jones” (1925), throughout the late 1920s and 1930s, he was a widely acclaimed actor and singer. With songs such as his trademark “Ol’ Man River,” he became one of the most popular concert singers of his time," from the PBS American Masters website.
