Guthard is pictured in a reversed oval-shaped half length portrait wearing a Union army jacket, an eagle shoulder breast sling plate, and kepi hat with an "H" insignia pin holding his rifle. The folder's cover bears an embossed image of a coat of arms, and the handwritten note, "Company H 9th Michigan; Volunteer Infantry; Aug 1861; Jacob Guthard."
