By cleaning uniforms, the Germans sought to kill vermin which would spread diseases inside prison camps. Due to the large number of Allied prisoners captured early in the war, prison camps had to use mobile disinfection machines employed by the German Army for their own troops. Once a camp was established, the installation of permanent disinfection chambers was a high priority.
