Notes:
Document was folded five times and severaly worn with several holes along folds., First initial “T” enlarged and flourished., Indenture document of Samuel Ladd of Chartham, Kent, England to Thomas Jackson of the Precincts of Canterbury Cathedral for ₤400 and messuage, including cottage, two gardens, two orchards, and three acres of land in Chartham. Ball-shaped “pendant” seal, attached, and made of red wax, on parchment tag bearing the device of a winged heart., Written in English secretary script (cursiva libraria). Black ink flaking and nearly illegible in many places., and Written in England and dated 8 April, 11 Charles I (1635). Four inscriptions on the dorse: two in an English secretary hand similar to the main text and two in a later crusive hand; the name of Elizabeth Ladd is mentioned along with the names Edward Nordey (sp?) and Godfrey Pyard (sp?). Formerly Phillipps no. 31801; the number “31801” located in center of dorse. Gift of the Department of History, Western Michigan University to WMU Special Collections in 1999.

Document folded six times., Text indented along the top. A 5-line flourished intial “T” opens the text., Indenture (mortgage) between John and Elizabeth Raymond, Essex and Dorothy Collard of Barnstone, Essex for ₤350 to John and Elizabeth Raymond for conveyance of capital massuage, Chelmshoes house and barns, stables, dove house [etc.] and lands in great Maplest[de?] and Deetingthorp [sp?], Essex. Containing 66 acres. Name of John Richardson mentioned. Two red-wax, impressed seals (design not visible), each stamped on tags., Written in clear mixed hand (secretary and italic conflations). Opening words and later, emphasized in larger bastard anglicana script. Pricking in both margins., and Written in England, county of Essex and dated 25 August 2 James II. At middle center in the near-contemporary hand, “15/18 [?] | Mr and Mrs Raymond | to | Mrs Collard} Release” and three illgible words in a near contemporary hand followed by “1686.” Also at the middle center of dorse in a later hand: “9.” Gift of the Western Michigan University Department of History to Special Collections in 1999.

An additional parchment sheet (135 x 260 mm) is attached by the tag behind the plica., Front of a folded indenture chirograph document (conveyance) of Penelope Warde of Great Dunmow, Essex, widow to Richard Phillips, who was a wheelwright, for ₤10 15s + ₤8 to be paid to her 10s each quarter day with grants of parcels of land in Great Dunmow towards Chelmsford., A 6-line inscription on the dorse in a contemporary hand similar to the main text, “Sealed and... in the presence of...” three signatures follow (illegible except for two “Johns”)., and Written in England, county of Essex and dated 1 December 1659 in document. Signed, “The mark of Penelope Warde” beside the slits for the parchment tag on the plica. Gift of Western Michigan University Department of History to WMU Special Collections in 1999.

Intial and following opening words bolded and with elaborate, calligraphic pen flourishes., Indenture chirograph document (conveyance) of Penelope Warde of Great Dunmow, Essex, widow to Richard Phillips, who was a wheelwright, for ₤10 15s + ₤8 to be paid to her 10s each quarter day with grants of parcels of land in Great Dunmow towards Chelmsford. Robert Remington also mentioned. Remnants of a red wax seal appended to the parchment tag., Written in late English secretary hand with exagerated loops on ascenders. A 6-line inscription on the dorse in a contemporary hand similar to the main text, “Sealed and... in the presence of...” three signatures follow (illegible except for two “Johns”). A 13-line addendum (codicil?) in a hand contemporary with the main document attached., and Written in England, county of Essex and dated 1 December 1659 in document. A 13 line, single color, initial “T” with flourishes opens the text., Indenture document (conveyance) between John Manwood of Broomfield, Essex, gentleman, and John Greene of Boreham, Essex, yeoman, witnessing that the latter has paid John Manwood ₤145 and twelve parcels of meadow ground containing 11 acres in Riseley Meade and Boreham, another Broade Meade in parishes of Boreham, Little Baddowe and Springfield Essex in occupation of John Ashbey. Excepts Mortgage 7 December 1633 to Henry Godsatte of Broomfield, Essex, for a lease for 99 years. Parchment tag still attached, lacking seal., Written in late England secretary script with italic influences. Opening words and later emphasized words in larger bastard anglicana script. Pricking in outer left margin for ruling., and Written in England and dated 16 December, 22 Charles II (1670). Two inscriptions on the dorse: towards the top in a similar script to that of the main text, “sealed and delivered in the house of William [sp?], John Green, William Holiday, ...”; towards the bottom in darker ink and later hand, “Manwood to Green. Five parchment tags, all seals missing., Indenture document (lease) between Sir William Compton, Sir Thomas Compton brother of Lord Compton, Augustine Nicolls of Kent, Walter Pye of the Meend, Herets, esquire, Robert Pye of Middle Temple, Thomas Warde of Great Abington, Combs gentlemen, servant to Lord Compton recites lease by Lord Compton. Parcels of meadow arable and pasture pertaining to capital messuage of mansion dwelling house of Lord Compton at Great Abington and all buildings of said house. To hold from the Annunciation of the Virgin for six years at 36 pounds 3 shillings and 3 pence. Document later canceled as evidence by the slashes in the body of text., Written in English secretary script. Opening words and later, emphasized in larger bastard anglicana script. Text opens with an 11 line, flourished initial “T.” Pricking in both margins., and Written in England and dated 7 November (?) James I. Dated of “1625” on the dorse in a near contemporary hand. Signatures of William Compton, Thomas Compton, Robert Pye and two others on the plica alongside parchment tags. Signature of Richard occurs twice; one post-contemporary, two line inscription on the dorse, towards the center (possibily in the hand of Phillipps). Formerly Phillipps no. 30177; the number “30177” located on the center of dorse. Gift of Western Michigan University Department of History to WMU Special Collections in 1999.
