- Prisoner of War guard duty was almost as monotonous for the guards as it was for the prisoners (although the penalties for German guards caught in the dereliction of duty encouraged greater vigilance). In this drawing of the guard room at Magdeburg, German troops enjoy some holiday festivities with tankards of beer, carol singing, and a decorated Christmas tree.

They stand in front of the hospital ward while prisoner patients stand behind a barbed wire fence. Red Cross inspections became a common practice in prison camps to ensure the best possible care of POW's under the care of the belligerent powers.

- German non-commissioned officers supervise the distribution of parcels to British prisoners of war in the compound of the prison camp at Goettingen. A Landsturm sentry, to the extreme left, stands guard during the activity. British parcels were valuable commodities in prison camps due to their rich contents.

- Russian POW's and a few civilian internees (in the back row) stand in their barrack at Norderstapel. The accommodations are very cramped and spartan. With benches aligning the two dormitory aisles, inmates enjoy little privacy, especially with their adjoined bunks. There are few prisoner possessions in the photograph. Note the large bowls suspended by wires above the bunks which were used for sanitation and hygiene.

The photograph was taken from the guard tower. Allied POW labor was critical to support the German war economy, especially after the army mobilized German males for military service.

- British officers line up outside the Citadel on the parade grounds for their daily roll call by a German non-commissioned officer. Roll calls helped guards maintain security by identifying absent war prisoners. Frequent roll calls, especially at night, led to POW complaints of abuse. At Mainz, however, the British officers appear to take the roll call in stride.

- French prisoners practice training their fire hose on the roof of a barrack at Darmstadt, as seen from the prison guard tower. Prisoners man the pumps in the foreground to provide the stream of water. Both German authorities and war prisoners had a great interest in preventing barrack fires which could have resulted in large numbers of casualties.

- A wagon full of bread has just arrived at Ulm and at the table to the right French and Russian prisoners weigh the loaves and inspect the quality of the bread. The bread has to be distributed to all of the barracks and a a fair allocation was important for POW survival. The quality of the bread in Germany, especially in prison camps, deteriorated dramatically during the war as a result of the Allied naval blockade.

- German doctors have isolated these Polish civilians on the suspicion that they have been exposed to cholera. These patients live in the tents but have to be quarantined to prevent a potential cholera epidemic. Cholera was a serious problem the Germans encountered in Russian Poland.
