From left to right are the Henry Hotel, a four story building, the Office of the Detroit Opera House Orchestra (in the former St. Joseph's Lutheran Church or St. John's German Evangelical Church), a store advertising fruits and oysters, the Furniture Wareroom, a shoe store, and a row of two storied storefronts which includes a bar and Jno B. Musschel's Detroit Marble Works. A horse is hitched in front of the bar, and part of a carriage is visible across the street on the left edge of the frame. The matting is off-white cardstock with a scrollwork frame printed around the photo. "Monroe Ave." is handwritten in the matting's lower left corner, but several letters are torn off. "c.1872" handwritten on verso.
