- Former Michigan State University Faculty Grievance Official Mary Brady, who came to MSU in 1972 to work in the College of Human Medicine, talks about her education and career and why she decided to accept the FGO position. She also talks about the status of the office when she first took on the job and all of the steps she took to improve the operation. Brady says that many of the faculty grievances she first encountered revolved around salary disputes and that there were tremendous variations between the colleges in how they evaluated faculty and determined pay raises. She also talks about why she retired and what she thinks that she accomplished during her tenure. Revitte shares his FGO experiences.

- Dr. George Eyster, DVM, talks about his career in veterinary cardiology and developing surgical techniques and conducting research at Michigan State University's College of Veterinary Medicine. Eyster talks about his mentors at MSU and developing open heart surgery procedures for animals, while at the same time, ground breaking procedures for humans were also being developed. He also describes sharing facilities with the College of Human Medicine at MSU, techniques used for both human and animal surgery, and cooperative programs with hospitals such as Ingham Medical in Lansing, Michigan. Eyster comments on changes in veterinary medicine, the decline in veterinary cardiac care, and how the animal rights movement has affected the availability of animals for research. - Michigan State University Professor Emeritus E. James Potchen, M.D., former Chair of the MSU Radiology Department, reflects upon his life and career at Michigan State University. Potchen talks about his parent's passion for education, their careers and their influence on his life. He describes his own academic history, including becoming both a doctor and a lawyer, his research and teaching positions and his fascination with nuclear medicine. Potchen also discusses coming to MSU to establish the Radiology Department as the university medical school was being created and the various academic and research projects which took him around the world. He points with pride to the memorial garden at the Radiology Building which was created with his financial support and guidance and he says that MSU was "a wonderful place to live a life." Potchen is interviewed by retired MSU Professor Pauline Adams for the Michigan State University Faculty Emeriti Association Oral History Project.

- John Cantlon, former Michigan State University provost, talks about his career and the beginnings of the university's Faculty Grievance Policy (FGP). Cantlon, who came to MSU in 1954 and moved into administration in 1969, says that the FGP was created after a failed attempt by faculty to unionize and discusses how the procedure was created and what parts worked in the past and should now be improved. Cantlon also talks about the campus student protests, the founding of the College of Osteopathic Medicine at MSU, the search for a new university president, fighting the Michigan Legislature for funding and his relationship with the MSU Board of Trustees. - Ajovi Scott-Emuakpor discusses his international career as a geneticist, physician, faculty member and administrator, much of it spent in the Department of Pediatrics and Human Development at Michigan State University. Ajovi recalls coming to MSU from Nigeria in 1965 as an undergraduate, joining the department as a graduate student in 1968 and working with the original faculty. He describes the college's early curriculum and focus on patient care and recognizes the uniqueness of pioneering efforts now copied at many other institutions. Ajovi also talks about returning to Nigeria to become Director of the Institute of Child Health and later coming back to MSU as a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics and Human Development. He says that collegiality in the department has now waned in the face of administration changes, retirements, and plans to move the school to Grand Rapids. Sociology Professor Meritus Dr. David J. - Keith Groty, former MSU Assistant Vice President of Personnel and Employee Relations, talks about his involvement with the university's Faculty Grievance Procedure (FGP). Groty says that he supported the FGP because he saw it as a mechanism for heading off faculty unionization, but that he really didn't have a role in the development of the FGP or the position of Faculty Grievance Official (FGO). Groty also says that MSU's FGP has worked through the years because it found an appropriate balance between the administration's power and faculty concerns. He talks about the failed faculty attempts at unionization and says that the main issue at MSU was always the disparity in faculty pay. - Charles Killingsworth discusses the establishment of the Michigan State University Labor and Industrial Relations Center in 1956, which later became the School of Labor and Industrial Relations (SLIR). Killingsworth, who came to MSU in 1947 to teach economics, says that he was asked by MSU President John Hannah to start and head the SLIR. He gives details on the school's beginnings, and explains why it was considered important by the university to provide an extension service to labor and business with accompanying research and scholarship. He also discusses faculty he hired through the years, the school's relationship with labor organizations, how the school expanded to offer graduate degrees and why he left the directorship to focus on teaching and arbitration, Ends abruptly. - Michigan State University African Studies Director David Wiley interviews George and Nancy Axinn on their seven years experience at University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), established with MSU faculty and US AID funding from the late 1950s. Wharton says that he was comfortable with labor unions and that the FGP was not created to thwart faculty unionization efforts. In fact, he says, most MSU faculty preferred the grievance model he proposed to unionization. Harrison says that he trained many faculty members and academic departments on the use of the grievance process, that he had to wade through a huge backlog of grievances when he started in the job, and that maybe two grievances per semester actually went to formal hearings. - In the second of a two part interview, Dr. Walter Adams, former interim President of Michigan State University and professor of economics, continues to discuss his career at MSU and the beginnings of the School of Labor and Industrial Relations (SLIR). Adams remembers a politically driven investigation of SLIR when the business community felt MSU was providing too much assistance to labor organizations, recounts an episode during the McCarthy era when a threat to the university was beaten back by John Hannah and explains how SLIR joined the College of Social Science rather than the business school. Adams also talks about his book "The test", his experiences as interim university president, his opposition to the Vietnam War and why he marched to the state capital with students on October 15, 1969, and efforts to unionize MSU faculty and the creation of a faculty grievance process. Adams says that he often spoke out on campus controversies and frequently had the ear of John Hannah and that he feels that the quality of the MSU administration has declined in the last ten to fifteen years. - In the second of a two part interview, Dr. Walter Adams, former interim President of Michigan State University and professor of economics, continues to discuss his career at MSU and the beginnings of the School of Labor and Industrial Relations (SLIR). Adams remembers a politically driven investigation of SLIR when the business community felt MSU was providing too much assistance to labor organizations, recounts an episode during the McCarthy era when a threat to the university was beaten back by John Hannah and explains how SLIR joined the College of Social Science rather than the business school. Adams also talks about his book "The test", his experiences as interim university president, his opposition to the Vietnam War and why he marched to the state capital with students on October 15, 1969, and efforts to unionize MSU faculty and the creation of a faculty grievance process. Adams says that he often spoke out on campus controversies and frequently had the ear of John Hannah and that he feels that the quality of the MSU administration has declined in the last ten to fifteen years. - Michigan State University African Studies Director David Wiley interviews George and Nancy Axinn on their seven years experience at University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), established with MSU faculty and US AID funding from the late 1950s. The Axinns talk about the involvement of Nigeria's first President Nnamdi Azikiwe and University Vice Chancellor Kalu Ezera, experiences of the numerous MSU faculty and staff at Nsukka, adoption of a unique higher education model different from the British/colonial model and attuned, like the MSU land grant model, to local needs through applied and social sciences and humanities including agriculture, engineering and nutrition/home economics, similarities between the Continuing Education Centre (UNN) and Kellogg Center (MSU), exchanges between MSU and UNN, and disruption and violence of the Biafran War of 1967-70 and evacuation of MSU faculty, personnel, and families.

- Ajovi Scott-Emuakpor discusses his international career as a geneticist, physician, faculty member and administrator, much of it spent in the Department of Pediatrics and Human Development at Michigan State University. Ajovi recalls coming to MSU from Nigeria in 1965 as an undergraduate, joining the department as a graduate student in 1968 and working with the original faculty. He describes the college's early curriculum and focus on patient care and recognizes the uniqueness of pioneering efforts now copied at many other institutions. Ajovi also talks about returning to Nigeria to become Director of the Institute of Child Health and later coming back to MSU as a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics and Human Development. He says that collegiality in the department has now waned in the face of administration changes, retirements, and plans to move the school to Grand Rapids. Sociology Professor Meritus Dr. David J. Kallen conducts the interview as part of the MSU Department of Pediatrics and Human Development Oral History Project.
