- Betty Fisher was employed as civil service secretary in the Grand Haven Coast Guard office for many years. She remembers the early Coast Guard picnics for the crew and their families and gives details about local Coast Guard history, including stations and office headquarters. She also recalls the day that the USCG Cutter Escanaba came to town in 1932. In 1939, Betty went to work in Chicago for the Coast Guard and later to Cleveland, Ohio, during World War II but returned to Grand Haven to become a life-long resident. In 1967, she retired as secretary from Challenge Stamping and Porcelain.

- Don Stevens, former Michigan State University trustee and AFL-CIO board member, reminisces about his childhood, family, farming, his early education, and his experiences with labor unions and union organizing. Stevens talks about his early work life, hearing about unions during the auto sit-down strikes in 1936 and 1937, listening to radio preachers condemn unions, and failed attempts to unionize a laundry where he worked and later success in organizing dairy and retail workers in the Grand Rapids area in the 1940s. Stevens also discusses CIO leadership during the war, union political efforts regarding health and safety, unemployment insurance, higher wages, and seniority rights and his own involvement in the growing union movement and labor organizing. Stevens is interviewed by John Revitte, MSU professor of Labor and Industrial Relations. Part one of four.

Dunbar focuses throughout the segment on the father-son nature of the Brundage Company, stressing the good relationship between H.F. Brundage and his sons, while exploring the history of the company. Dunbar also interviews Miles Batterson, the head of the cost department at Brundage, about why he chose to work at Brundage after completing his degree and how his college degree has aided him in his work.

- The Blood Brothers Machine Company is featured on this installment of "Western Michigan at work" hosted by Dr. Willis Dunbar. Dunbar describes the company's transformation from a bicycle manufacturer to an automobile manufacturer, and its transition to making automobile parts after automobile manufacturing proved to be too costly. Dewey Kemp, assistant purchasing manager, and C.E. Wood, sales manager, discuss their products and manufacturing process, as well as the company's contribution to the war effort during World War II.

- First half of this recording features the dedication of the Nativity Scene on Dewey Hill in Grand Haven in 1964. The program starts with a short introduction, a prayer, and a speech by Governor George Romney followed by the Nativity Scene program. The second half of the recording, which begins at 33 minutes into the file, consists of the WGHN radio program featuring Grand Haven resident Raymond O'Malley recalling the sinking of the USCG Cutter Escanaba in June 1943. The Escanaba was destroyed while on escort duty from Greenland and sank in less than one minute leaving only two survivors in near freezing waters.

- Grand Haven resident Chris Endenburg recalls growing up in the Netherlands during World War II. Tom Puleo interviews Endenburg about all aspects of the German occupation, from forced labor camps, dodging Nazi officers, the Dutch black market, concentration camps, to the liberation of his country by the Canadian Army in 1945. Chris also recalls his emigration to America.

- Description:
- The only known recording of President Benjamin Harrison presumably made years after his presidency by Giuseppe Bettini, sometime between 1894 and 1899. This modern recording features a narrator explaining how Harrison's voice was recorded and features the 1814 campaign song of Harrison's grandfather "Old Tippecanoe," President William Henry Harrison, which was resurrected for Benjamin's 1888 campaign. The Library of Congress says only one copy of the recording has been found and is located at the Benjamin Harrison Memorial Home and this recording was made from that recording.

- Ajovi Scott-Emuakpor discusses his international career as a geneticist, physician, faculty member and administrator, much of it spent in the Department of Pediatrics and Human Development at Michigan State University. Ajovi recalls coming to MSU from Nigeria in 1965 as an undergraduate, joining the department as a graduate student in 1968 and working with the original faculty. He describes the college's early curriculum and focus on patient care and recognizes the uniqueness of pioneering efforts now copied at many other institutions. Ajovi also talks about returning to Nigeria to become Director of the Institute of Child Health and later coming back to MSU as a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics and Human Development. He says that collegiality in the department has now waned in the face of administration changes, retirements, and plans to move the school to Grand Rapids. Sociology Professor Meritus Dr. David J. Kallen conducts the interview as part of the MSU Department of Pediatrics and Human Development Oral History Project.

- Alex Lichtenstein, professor of history at Indiana University, delivers a talk entitled, "Taming the Shop Floor in South Africa: Black Workers in the Struggle Against Apartheid, 1973 - 1985". Lichtenstein reflects on the history of labor struggles during Apartheid and ties them to a strike by miners in August of 2012 under the ANC government. He describes oppression and attempts to resolve the 1973 strikes and compares this with the ANC's brutal reaction to the current mine strike. Lichtenstein comments on white union member resistance to blacks joining unions and a move by the government to expand the "works committees" to control the blacks and temper their aspirations. A question and answer session follows. Lichtenstein is introduced by Michigan State University Professor John P. Beck. But the speech was actually recorded by actor Leonard Spencer, who was famous for his recorded versions of comic and dramatic monologues. In this speech, Debs argues that socialism is the answer to society's problems. Debs was the Socialist Party of America candidate for President in 1904.

- Michigan State University Africana Librarian Joe Lauer is interviewed by Peter Limb about Lauer's career at Michigan State and the development of the Africana Collection at the MSU Libraries. Lauer discusses the history of the International Library within the MSU Libraries and how MSU's involvement with the University of Nigeria at Nsukka during the 1960's created a demand by faculty for more books about Africa. Lauer talks about his own interest in African Studies, how he came to work at Michigan state and describes projects that he has been involved in over the years, both at MSU and on a national level. Lauer and Limb, who is also an MSU Africana Librarian, also discuss the challenges and rewards associated with Africana librarianship, focusing specifically on collection development and cataloging. - Glenn Eaton served the city of Grand Haven first as a member of the City Council and then as Mayor. He was also active in the Tri-Cities Historical Society and as part of the Coast Guard Festival management team. He served on the Board of Light and Power and the Duncan Park Commission and devoted over sixty years of service to the Boy Scouts. In 1973, he was given the Meritorious Public Service Award for his work with the United States Coast Guard and the promotion of the Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival. In this interview, Glenn discusses his projects with the Coast Guard, including the dedication of the mast of the USCG cutter Escanaba, and his continued interest in Duncan Woods.
