Became naturalized citizen in 1859 when he "renounced and abjured all allegiance and fidelity to every Foreign Prince, Potentate, State and Sovereignty whatsoever, and particularly to the Queen of Great Britain." Served as a private in the Michigan Infantry in the Civil War. Married Mrs. Charlotte C. Sherman on October 27, 1859.
