Containing 66 acres. Name of John Richardson mentioned. Two red-wax, impressed seals (design not visible), each stamped on tags., Three names in a different hand, possibly contemporary, on the lower corner, all illegible., and Written in England, county of Essex and dated 25 August 2 James II. At middle center in the near-contemporary hand, “15/18 [?] | Mr and Mrs Raymond | to | Mrs Collard} Release” and three illgible words in a near contemporary hand followed by “1686.” Also at the middle center of dorse in a later hand: “9.” Gift of the Western Michigan University Department of History to Special Collections in 1999.

An additional parchment sheet (125 x 150 mm) attached by parchment tag., Stamp (crown and interlocked letters “rra”; the number “35” in small letters) on a small squire piece of paper attached to upper right corner of probate. Inscription in a contemporary hand on the middle dorse: “[illegible word] Eliz ffarmer de Twywill.” Also in the middle center of dorse: “18/15?” in pencil. In lower dorse: “$65.00” in pencil., Will of Elizabeth of Twywell, bequething seven pounds to son Thomas Farmer to release him from prison and 20 pounds to daughter Alice Farmer and John Farmer, son of Thomas Farther. To Diana, Elizabeth, Catherine, Rebecca, Lydia: 20 pounds and five portions of will. Names also mentioned include John, Mary, Thomas, and William Farmer. Signed in the presence of Thomas Nickallson, Sarah Smith, and Susanna Srigmore. Attached probate is dated 1701 and includes the name of Edward Caldwell. Notorial signature of “Geo: Maydwell.”, Written in mixed hand ruled in ink and hard point. Pre-written portions or probate written in a precise English secretary hand in black ink, other portions in lighter secretary hand., and Written in England, probably Twywell in Northhamptonshire. Five parchment tags, all seals missing., Indenture document (lease) between Sir William Compton, Sir Thomas Compton brother of Lord Compton, Augustine Nicolls of Kent, Walter Pye of the Meend, Herets, esquire, Robert Pye of Middle Temple, Thomas Warde of Great Abington, Combs gentlemen, servant to Lord Compton recites lease by Lord Compton. Parcels of meadow arable and pasture pertaining to capital messuage of mansion dwelling house of Lord Compton at Great Abington and all buildings of said house. To hold from the Annunciation of the Virgin for six years at 36 pounds 3 shillings and 3 pence. Document later canceled as evidence by the slashes in the body of text., Written in English secretary script. Opening words and later, emphasized in larger bastard anglicana script. Text opens with an 11 line, flourished initial “T.” Pricking in both margins., and Written in England and dated 7 November (?) James I. Dated of “1625” on the dorse in a near contemporary hand. Signatures of William Compton, Thomas Compton, Robert Pye and two others on the plica alongside parchment tags. Signature of Richard occurs twice; one post-contemporary, two line inscription on the dorse, towards the center (possibily in the hand of Phillipps). - Document was folded five times and severaly worn with several holes along folds., Ball-shaped “pendant” seal, attached, and made of red wax, on parchment tag bearing the device of a winged heart., Back of a folded indenture document of Samuel Ladd of Chartham, Kent, England to Thomas Jackson of the Precincts of Canterbury Cathedral for ₤400 and messuage, including cottage, two gardens, two orchards, and three acres of land in Chartham. Ball-shaped, red wax seal, attached on a parchmat tag, and bearing the device of a winged heart., and Written in England and dated 8 April, 11 Charles I (1635). Four inscriptions on the dorse: two in an English secretary hand similar to the main text and two in a later crusive hand; the name of Elizabeth Ladd is mentioned along with the names Edward Nordey (sp?) and Godfrey Pyard (sp?). - Eight sheets joined by parchment tie in upper left corner., On items 3, 4, and 5, dorse: three to four line near contemporary inscriptions. All items include the name of Richard Humfrey and Richard Cannon., Eight parchment court rolls relating to West Hanningfield, Essex, all of which are contemporary with one another and are joined together by a single parchment tie. Extensive damage to the membranes of several rolls with significant loss of text. Contents include: Richard Cannon surrenders tenement called Tanners in West Hanningfield to use of Richard Gynne and Humphrey Brooke sues (item 1); death and will records for Richard Cannon (item 2); death and will of Rchard Humfrey (item 4); licenses to fell trees (item 6); license to lease holding (item 7); and surrender and readmission of Richard Humfrey (item 8)., Written in English secretary script, likely all by the same hand. Item 1 is written in slightly larger and darker hand with opening words in bastard anglicana., and Written in England, probably in West Hanningfield between 1603 and 1611 (each document has a different date). On the first item, dorse: the number”59” in pencil. On item 2, dorse: “843” in pencil. Gift of Western Michigan University Department of History to Special Collections in 1999.
