- This photograph shows the city of Stamboul, including the Hagia Sophia, from the Galata Bridge. The Turks marched British prisoners captured at Gallipoli across this bridge in November 1915 to celebrate their victory against the failed Anglo-French assault on the Turkish Straits. Under international law, POWs were not to be used for such propaganda purposes.

- An American prisoner of war, left, and a French POW play a game of checkers while another French soldier, sitting on the bench to the right, writes a letter. Two French colonial troopers intently watch the game while another colonial enjoys a drink. German prison camps became a "melting pot" for men from around the world.

- Belgian and French prisoners wait patiently in line outside of the kitchen in Zossen to receive a bowl of soup. The same prisoners happily pose for a picture with hot soup after receiving their meals in the camp kitchen. Individual distribution of rations was inefficient but it guaranteed equality between the POW's. Service to barrack representatives represented a faster distribution of rations but German authorities could not supervise the actual disposition inside all of the barracks.

- A Russian POW is about to be lowered into a grave for his final resting place at the prisoner of war cemetery at Koenigsbrueck. The cemetery is lined with fir trees and a priest officiates the service at the foot of the casket. The dead prisoner might have been a Pole as reflected by the Latin cross used in the ceremony.

- Serbian fiddlers strike up a tune in the prison compound at Nagymegyer to provide entertainment for the prisoners on their day off from work.

- All three tennis courts are in action in this photograph of tennis matches in an unidentified German prison. The center court features a game of singles, while the other two matches are doubles. Tennis was one sport which allowed Allied officers to enjoy the weather and get some exercise.

- Civilian internees simply collected their meager belongings and walked home from German prison camps after they learned of their release under the terms of the Armistice. They were eager to return home to Belgium and France and chose not to wait for transportation.

- French and Belgian war prisoners and interned civilians enjoy glasses of milk at the canteen/milk hall at the prison camp in Cassel. In 1916, when this photograph was taken, food was relatively plentiful in Germany and POW's could obtain a variety of foods in prison camps. Prisoners at Cassel wore white armbands for identification purposes on their upper arms.

- Russian prisoners stand inside their barrack in the prison camp at Cottbus in this Red Cross post card. The barrack is extremely crowded as prisoners sleep in triple-tiered bunk beds. This camp suffered a typhus epidemic and the cramped conditions undoubtedly contributed to the spread of the disease. Red Cross officials inspected sanitary conditions in both Allied and German prison camps and took photographs to support their findings.
