- Former Michigan State University Faculty Grievance Official Mary Brady, who came to MSU in 1972 to work in the College of Human Medicine, talks about her education and career and why she decided to accept the FGO position. She also talks about the status of the office when she first took on the job and all of the steps she took to improve the operation. Brady says that many of the faculty grievances she first encountered revolved around salary disputes and that there were tremendous variations between the colleges in how they evaluated faculty and determined pay raises. She also talks about why she retired and what she thinks that she accomplished during her tenure. Revitte shares his FGO experiences.

- Michigan State University Professor Emeritus E. James Potchen, M.D., former Chair of the MSU Radiology Department, reflects upon his life and career at Michigan State University. Potchen talks about his parent's passion for education, their careers and their influence on his life. He describes his own academic history, including becoming both a doctor and a lawyer, his research and teaching positions and his fascination with nuclear medicine. Potchen also discusses coming to MSU to establish the Radiology Department as the university medical school was being created and the various academic and research projects which took him around the world. He points with pride to the memorial garden at the Radiology Building which was created with his financial support and guidance and he says that MSU was "a wonderful place to live a life." Potchen is interviewed by retired MSU Professor Pauline Adams for the Michigan State University Faculty Emeriti Association Oral History Project.

- Don Stevens, former Michigan State University trustee and AFL-CIO board member, reminisces about his childhood, family, farming, his early education, and his experiences with labor unions and union organizing. Stevens talks about his early work life, hearing about unions during the auto sit-down strikes in 1936 and 1937, listening to radio preachers condemn unions, and failed attempts to unionize a laundry where he worked and later success in organizing dairy and retail workers in the Grand Rapids area in the 1940s. Stevens also discusses CIO leadership during the war, union political efforts regarding health and safety, unemployment insurance, higher wages, and seniority rights and his own involvement in the growing union movement and labor organizing. Stevens is interviewed by John Revitte, MSU professor of Labor and Industrial Relations. Part one of four.

- Lansing Community College student Michael Venyah talks about his African born father and his mother who is from Alabama, and their respective professions and his high school experience which included dealing with racism and charges of plagiarism. Venyah says that he does not aspire to a middle-class lifestyle and that money doesn't mean that much to him. He compares college in the U.S. and England, describes his approach to life, his ability to be objective, his love of performing music, and not being driven to conform to any traditional definitions of success as he pursues a degree in English and writing. Venyah also reads two of his poems. Part of the series "Generation X: The Hopes and Dreams of College Students," produced and recorded by Robert F. Crawford.

- Dr. Jack Carmichael, Michigan State University alumnus and noted chemist and expert in environmental pollution studies and industrial development discusses his life and career in a wide-ranging oral history interview. Carmichael reminisces about growing up in Ravenswood, WV, becoming an Eagle Scout, being voted "best Thespian" in school and later being chosen as valedictorian of his class, all while working in the family business. Carmichael talks about leaving home to major in chemistry and physics at Ohio Wesleyan, taking a job with Dow Corning in Midland, MI after graduation and later coming to MSU in the early 1960s to earn his doctorate degree. Carmichael also talks about his post-doctoral work at the University of Oregon, teaching at the University of Massachusetts, changing direction to tackle environmental issues, joining the Peace Corp, consulting with American cities and foreign countries on clean water and sanitary systems, and starting a family while working for the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). Carmichael is interviewed by his daughter Christine Carmichael, doctoral candidate in the MSU Department of Forestry.

- In an oral history interview, Gladys Beckwith, professor emerita of American Thought and Language at Michigan State University, talks about earning her doctorate from MSU, staying on to teach and and later becoming interested in faculty governance issues and faculty unionization as she began to see that professors had little involvement in the decisions which affected them and the great disparity in faculty compensation between departments and gender. Beckwith also talks about suing MSU for sex discrimination, unsuccessful attempts by faculty to unionize, and colleges around the country using more and more part time faculty, which calls a national disgrace. Beckwith is interviewed by John Revitte, MSU professor of Labor and Industrial Relations and current Faculty Grievance Officer.

- Lawrence Haigh, a native of Green bay, Wisconsin, continues to reminisce about his maritime career in the Merchant Marine during World War Two. Haigh talks about his duties as an engineer on various ships, going to Japan in the summer of 1946 and selling sugar on the black market. Haigh also describes landing in Oakland, CA after the war and leaving the service to continue his education at the University of Wisconsin. Part two of two parts.

- Hmong immigrant, lawyer and pastor Dr. T. Christopher Thao recounts emigrating to the U.S. and living in isolation with his sponsor in rural Arkansas. He discusses his educational drive which took him to Minnesota where he obtained his undergraduate and law degrees as well as a Ph.D. in New Testament studies. He says his call to ministry took him first to California and then finally brought him to Warren, Michigan.

- Professor and award winning author Ilana Blumberg reads from her memoir, "House of study : a Jewish woman among books". She describes the book as detailing two educations, one in the Jewish religious and cultural studies, and another in modern secular America. Her readings tell of her memories of libraries and her time studying in Israel, a new opportunity for women at the time. Blumberg also talks about studying ancient Jewish texts and compares that with her education at Columbia University and her specialty in 19th century Victorian literature. A question and answer end the session follows. Blumberg is introduced by MSU Librarian Peter Berg for the Michigan State University Libraries' Michigan Writers Series.
