- President Barack Obama gives an address to the White House staff, speaking on public service to advance the interests of Americans in a more "responsible and accountable" government. President Obama discusses the executive orders he will be signing that day, including a pay freeze on senior White House staff salaries, strict limitations on lobbyists, and policies needed to make the government more trustworthy. After Obama signs the executive orders, Vice President Joe Biden leads the White House staff through the oath of office.

- President Franklin Delano Roosevelt delivers his State of the Union address during a fireside chat. He hopes to increase the standard of living, and warns of wartime special interest lobbyists only out for profit. The President recommends initiatives to Congress: a simplified tax law, a continuation of the law for the renegotiation of war contracts, a cost of food law, an early reenactment of the Stabilization Act of 1942, and a national service law.
