Events include Reverend Rick Warren's opening prayer, Aretha Franklin's performance of "My Country Tis of Thee," Elizabeth Alexander's recitation of poetry, and Reverend Joseph Lowery's closing benediction. Justice John Paul Stevens administers the oath of office to Vice President-elect Joe Biden, while John G. Roberts Jr. gives the oath to President-elect Barack Obama. Once sworn in, President Obama speaks to the estimated 1.8 million spectators. Obama highlights on the challenges the nation faces in the economy and war, saying that we all have a duty to ourselves, the nation, and the world. Following this, Obama closes in saying, "Let it be said by our children's children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations."

- Betty Fisher was employed as civil service secretary in the Grand Haven Coast Guard office for many years. She remembers the early Coast Guard picnics for the crew and their families and gives details about local Coast Guard history, including stations and office headquarters. She also recalls the day that the USCG Cutter Escanaba came to town in 1932. In 1939, Betty went to work in Chicago for the Coast Guard and later to Cleveland, Ohio, during World War II but returned to Grand Haven to become a life-long resident. In 1967, she retired as secretary from Challenge Stamping and Porcelain.

- Five years after the terrorist attacks on the United States, President George W. Bush gives a speech to the American people, regarding the war in Iraq and on terrorism. He calls the war on terrorism "the calling of our generation." Bush admits that Saddam Hussein was not responsible for the attacks on our country, but he's regime was still a threat that posed "a risk the worlf could not afford to take." He also says that the mastermind behind the September 11th attacks, Osama bin Laden, and his men remain in hiding, leaving them a message, "No matter how long it takes, America will find you and we will bring you to justice." Bush states that "The war is not over -- and it will not be over until either we or the extremists emerge victorious."
