- Description:
- Circa 1990s. Old Main renovation June 1996 through January 1997. Photographs by Patricia Bartkowski, University Archives. Interior image of hallway looking at two columns and through a door during renovation. Malcomson and Higginbotham, 1896. Originally Central High School, Old Main is Wayne State’s place of origin and now a university icon. The stately Romanesque Revival composition is softened by the buff-colored brick. Under the leadership of David Mackenzie, a junior college was begun in the building in 1917. In 1926, high school classes left the building and the growing college took over all the space in the stately structure. Renovation and addition by Ghafari Associates 1997. Dated December 6, 1996.

- Description:
- Circa 1960s. Minoru Yamasaki and Associates. 1964. Image is of the Cass Avenue facing side of the building. Partnered with the DeRoy Auditorium, Yamasaki’s form-making derived much of its strength from the careful compositional massing of pure forms and pattern repetition of surface elements. Here, the composition of streetwall-gateway building and freestanding pavilion is perhaps a modern take on a medieval castle keep. The two buildings are linked by an underground passage. Powerful moves and timeless references create an overall effect nearly as compelling as Yamasaki’s McGregor Center nearby. The original name for the Prentis Building was University Hall. In 1965 the Board of Governors decided to change the name to Meyer and Anna Prentis Building because of Prentis’ effort in creating the School of Administration.
