Inside: STATE OF" MICHIGAN 1787-Continental Congress established the Northwest Territory, which included Michigan. 1805-Michigan became a separate territory. Wm. Hull of Massachusetts appointed governor by President Jefferson. 1813-Lewis Cass appointed governor of Michigan Territory. 1835-Michigan adopted a State Constitution, and elected a group of state officials with Stevens T . Mason as Governor. 1837-Congress acknowledged Michigan to be a state in the Union.
