- Photograph. Sepia-toned photo showing the ruins of Harmonie Hall and the Boydell Bros. Building after a fire. The view shows the fronts and one side of the charred remains of the brick and stone buildings. Many spectators can be seen on the street near the two buildings. Handwriting on the verso shows "Harmonie Hall & Boydell Bros. Bldg., SW corner of Beaubien and Champlain (now E. Lafayette), October 14, 1893."

- Resolution printed on cardstock in script with an ornate red and gold header, honoring Detroit Fire Department Chief John Kendall upon his retirement. The document lists positions he's held, bears a gold adhesive seal of the Fire Commission of the city of Detroit, and is signed by fire commissioners Fred T. Moran, William V. Moore, Sauborn T. McGraw, and Paul F. Bagley, as well as secretary George W. Stockwell. The document reads: June 27, 1865 Appointed fireman No. 5 Aug. 7, 1871 Promoted to Foreman Truck 2 April 1, 1882 Transferred to Truck 1 Jan. 20, 1883 Detailed as acting district engineer June 25, 1885 Promoted to District Engineer, to date from Jan. 1 1883 Feb. 9, 1895 Promoted to Assistant Chief of Department Sept. 12, 1898 Appointed Chief of Department to date from Sept. 16 Dec. 10, 1906 Placed on Retired List to Date from Jan. 1, 1907 The record of Chief Kendall is one which may well be a source of pride to our department. It shows the sterling qualities and abilities of the man, his faithful performance of duty and his rugged honest of purpose. No one can make such a record without possessing all the qualities which go to make up a brave, strong man. It is such me who furnish the stability of our service and make our Department a credit to our beautiful city. In granting the request of Chief Kendall for retirement, the Commission yields to a physical necessity. We feel that we have lost a loyal member of the Department, and that our City will miss a faithful public servant. - Description:
- Detroit Fire Department active duty certificate, engraved by Capewell and Kimmel, and issued to Andrew Werbecht on July 31, 1854. The document bears the signatures of President Jerome Croul, Treasurer Alexander Paton, and Secretary Benjamin Vernor, beside a corroded metallic embossed Fire Department of the City of Detroit seal. Illustrations, purportedly hand colored by Robert Hopkin, of uniformed firefighters, an early fire apparatus and firefighting equipment, the seal of the State of Michigan, and Neptune flanked by two winged monsters are bordered by scrollwork. The number "12" has been added to the helmets of the firefighters and to the apparatus, likely indicating Werbecht's involvement in Woodbridge Fire Company No. 12. The certificate is mounted on linen.

- Cabinet card bearing a sepia-toned head-and-shoulders portrait photograph of Detroit Fire Commissioner Peter Henkel. Handwriting on the verso notes "ex-commissioner, Peter Henkel." This photograph is one of a series of eight photos of former Detroit Fire Department Commissioners. The decorative logo of the photographer's studio (Randall) has been torn off of the verso of the cabinet card photo. The proof bears the name of "Geo. Francis Train" at the bottom, and a stamp for "Randall, 220 & 222 Woodward Ave., Detroit, Mich.," is shown on the verso.

- City of Detroit, Fire Commission appointment certificate, printed by the Calvert Lithograph Company, and issued to Benjamin Vernor, on April 1, 1874, for the term ending April 1878. The certificate contains the signatures of Controller Emery J. Garfield, and Mayor Alexander Lewis, a metallic gold embossed seal of the City of Detroit, engraved imagery from the seal, affixed sepia-toned head-and-shoulder portrait photographs of the fire commissioners Peter Henkel (top left), Jerome Croul (bottom left), Joseph Godfrey (top right), and Benjamin Vernor (bottom right). The certificate is mounted on linen.

The fireman is wearing his uniform which includes a long, double-breasted coat, decorative belt, and cap. His shirt has been hand-colored in purple in the collar area. The badge on his coat has the handwritten number "2." (The copy photo shows the handwritten number "3" on his coat and the badge number on the cap also appears to be number 3.) Handwriting on the verso notes "Whitney B. Beattie."

- Color postcard depicting a ladder truck in front of a burning downtown building. Several firemen are visible on the street and up ladders. Handwritten message on verso reads "I just came in from the fire and saw the department make the run." Postmarked Sep 3, 1908.

- Description:
- Sepia-toned albumen photo of Detroit's first steam fire engine. The photo shows a horse-drawn fire engine with one fireman in the driver's seat, three firemen standing on the sidewalk, and two firemen standing beside the rear wheel of the fire engine. Several bystanders are also visible. A brick fire station building is visible in the background. Four square decorative motifs that represent various tools of the fire department can be seen along the face of the fire station building. The name, "M. R. Freeman," is stamped in black ink in the lower right corner of the print.

- Large sepia-toned photograph of Detroit Fire Department Chief James C. Broderick and driver George Appel, seated in an Oldsmobile Autocrat, which is parked on a brick street, beside a brick wall. "DFD" is painted on the car's door. The photo is mounted on cardstock. A typewritten caption affixed to the verso reads: Chief James Broderick, pictured here in the driver's seat of an early motorized chief's car, served in Detroit's Fire Department for fifty continuous years. He was one of the few men who witnessed the passing from the hand engines to steam engines and from the steam engines to gasoline motor-driven apparatus. He saw the department grow from a small group of volunteers to a department of over 1,700 men. His first big fire after taking charge of the Fire Department was the spectacular Michigan Stove Works fire, which occurred on January 8, 1907, one week after he became Chief. The biggest fire in Chief Broderick's time was the D.M. Ferry Seed Company fire on New Year's Day, 1886, with a loss of a million dollars, a huge sum in those days.

Two fire department ladders are visible on the left side of the building, one is at the front, and another is at the far right side. One of the fire department ladder company wagons (number not visible) and a steam pumper can be seen in the lower right area of the photo. Many spectators can be seen on the streets adjacent to the church. Handwriting on the verso shows "First Congregational Church, built 1863, Fort & Wayne Streets, later used by Detroit Journal."
