- Former steelworker and labor leader Tom Turner talks about his childhood and education in River Rouge and Ecorse, Mi and his involvement in organized labor and the civil rights movement. Turner also talks about discrimination and segregation in Detroit and in the workplace, his time as president of the Detroit NAACP and president of the Wayne County AFL-CIO, and the many labor leaders who inspired him. Turner says that black trade union leaders constantly and successfully pressured employers and organized labor to widen access for minorities to skilled trades and better paying jobs.

- Alex Lichtenstein, professor of history at Indiana University, delivers a talk entitled, "Taming the Shop Floor in South Africa: Black Workers in the Struggle Against Apartheid, 1973 - 1985". Lichtenstein reflects on the history of labor struggles during Apartheid and ties them to a strike by miners in August of 2012 under the ANC government. He describes oppression and attempts to resolve the 1973 strikes and compares this with the ANC's brutal reaction to the current mine strike. Lichtenstein comments on white union member resistance to blacks joining unions and a move by the government to expand the "works committees" to control the blacks and temper their aspirations. A question and answer session follows. Lichtenstein is introduced by Michigan State University Professor John P. Beck. Part of the "Our Daily Work/Our Daily Lives" Brown Bag series sponsored by the MSU School of Human Resources and Labor Relations and the MSU Museum. Held at the MSU Museum.

- In this installment of "Western Michigan at work," Dr. Willis Dunbar profiles the Benton Harbor Fruit Market, "the largest open-air, cash-to-grower market in the world." Dunbar describes in detail the way fruit and vegetable growers come from western Michigan farms to sell their wares to buyers from 31 states, including buyers from A&P. He explains that growers made over nine million dollars last year by selling a variety of produce including squash, tomatoes, celery, peaches, cherries, and apples. Dunbar also discuss the market's labor exchange, where laborer register for work and growers use the registry to hire as many workers as needed for the season.

Obama salutes a decade of military service by the 9/11 generation and recounts the achievements of military personnel in earlier conflicts. Obama also talks about providing better and services for veterans, maintaining funding for programs, providing housing, helping veterans get training for jobs in the new economy, and proposes a Returning heroes tax credit for companies that hire unemployed veterans and a Wounded warrior tax credit for companies that hire unemployed veterans with a disability.

- Clare Luz, professor in the College of Osteopathic Medicine, Department of Family Medicine at Michigan State University, delivers a talk entitled "Critical lifelines: the lives and work of personal care workers." Luz discusses her research on personal care workers and shares stories of the workers from Michigan who she interviewed. Luz says there is a shortage of personal care workers in the U.S., especially in Michigan, which could be addressed by paying higher wages, improving working conditions, and encouraging broad societal support of those in the field. Khalid Ibrahim, Clinical Research Informatics Technologist with the Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute at MSU, who also participated in the personal care worker study, provides additional commentary on the interviews of care workers. Luz answers questions from the audience. The event is convened by Professor John P. Beck from the MSU School of Human Resources and Labor Relations.
