- The YMCA provided musical instruments which allowed French POW's to form bands and orchestras in prison. Access to instruments gave skilled musicians the opportunity to continue practicing for post-war performances and concerts improved the morale of the general camp population. The band at Muenster is performing an afternoon concert in the prison compound. Note the laundry drying outdoors outside of the barracks.

- French and British prisoners organize packets in the mail censorship room at Heuberg in preparation for distribution to the prisoner population, while German non-commissioned officers inspect packages for contraband. One German censor is cutting into a package with a knife on the left, a process that did not please most parcel recipients.

- Belgian and French prisoners wait patiently in line outside of the kitchen in Zossen to receive a bowl of soup. The same prisoners happily pose for a picture with hot soup after receiving their meals in the camp kitchen. Individual distribution of rations was inefficient but it guaranteed equality between the POW's. Service to barrack representatives represented a faster distribution of rations but German authorities could not supervise the actual disposition inside all of the barracks.

- French and Belgian war prisoners and interned civilians enjoy glasses of milk at the canteen/milk hall at the prison camp in Cassel. In 1916, when this photograph was taken, food was relatively plentiful in Germany and POW's could obtain a variety of foods in prison camps. Prisoners at Cassel wore white armbands for identification purposes on their upper arms.

- French prisoners pose for a photograph on stage of the "Casino" theater at Amberg. Among this comedy troupe is a young "lady" and a bull. Theatricals played a critical role in bolstering prisoner morale in German prison camps.

- French and Belgian officers pose with their instruments for this photograph from Halle-am-Saal. The prisoners have formed a string orchestra consisting of violins, cellos, and an organ and their music sits on metal music stands. There are cartoons pinned to the wall in preparation for a future production.

- French prisoners sing a song outdoors in the prison compound in Zossen under the direction of a choir director. German NCO's and officers stand in the background next to the barrack. The choir leader has set up his stand on top of a narrow gauge railway line. Due to the size of the camp, the Germans used a small railway line system to transport supplies to the camp.

- French enlisted men,colonial troops, and a few French sailors, stand in front of the prison kitchen at the prison at Kaltenkirchen. Note the white bands on the upper arms of the prisoners which are probably worn for identification purposes.

- A scene in the kitchen of the officers' prison camp in Hannoverisch Muenden. The kitchen staff stands in the background with German non-commissioned officers, Allied enlisted men (who served as the cooks), and several French and British officers. Note the conventional stove in the kitchen instead of the huge pressure cookers designed for mass food production found in enlisted men's camps. Loaves of bread are stacked on the shelves in the back of the kitchen.
