"Eastern Michigan University was founded in 1849 as Michigan State Normal School, the first institution of its kind west of the Allegheny Mountains and the sixth normal school founded in the U.S. The State Legislature changed the name in 1899 to Michigan State Normal College (MSNC), the first accredited by North Central Association. In 1917 MSNC was also accredited among the "Institutions Primarily for the Training of Teachers." Normal College became the first college in Michigan offering work in industrial arts, business, home economics, music, occupational therapy, physical education, and special education," from Eastern Michigan University's website.
