Simon discusses her involvement with the MSU Faculty Grievance Policy (FGP) and the Faculty Grievance Official (FGO) when she served as MSU Provost and later as MSU President. - Description:
- Tom Marvin, professor of English and American Studies at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) delivers a talk entitled, "Occupy the University: Putting Student and Labor Activism in Perspective". Marvin suggests that public education is under attack by Neo-liberalism with its demand that all human activities justify themselves based on a narrow conception of profit and loss. He explains how and why it is important for students and labor unions to work together to affect the affordability of higher education as well as the working conditions of faculty and staff. Marvin uses the tactics and goals of the recent "Occupy Wall Street" movement and juxtaposes them against corporate interests and influence in public education institutions. A question and answer session follows. Marvin is introduced by Michigan State University Professor John P. Beck. Part of the "Our Daily Work/Our Daily Lives" Brown Bag series sponsored by the MSU School of Human Resources and Labor Relations and the MSU Museum. Held at the MSU Museum.

Derman recalls his time at the University of Michigan, joining Students for a Democratic Society, teaching African American students in Detroit, his anti-war efforts, and his work as an anti-Apartheid activist. He also talks about his work in South Africa with land use planning, water rights, and education and later shifting his focus to Zimbabwe to assist development and resettlement projects. Derman questions the ability of younger faculty and students to be engaged both as academics and citizens. - Description:
- For a long time, Pan-Africanists have advocated the establishment of a Pan-African University. In spite of various efforts in this direction, the hope has failed to materialise. The challenge is that such a university must be a new university, not only in the approach to teaching and research, but more fundamentally, in its strategic conception and its placement at the base of African and human emancipation and liberation. The establishment of the Pan-African University should have as its overall goal the provision of opportunities for higher and advanced education for students and adult learners in the context of a new African-based epistemology and methodology. The models of Western Universities which Africa adopted have proved completely unsuitable for Africa's needs. But for the Pan-African University to set a new path in the search for knowledge and truth, it must first and foremost be built on a sound spiritual basis that highlights those aspects of African spiritual life that has enabled the African people to survive as a human community throughout the centuries. It is time that such a task be embarked on headlong.
