- Singer-songwriters Andy Cohen and Noah Shull deliver a talk and performance entitled, "Songs that Work: Music from the Workplace to the Workhouse." Cohen describes the world of street performers and tells stories of music and working people in the Asheville area of North Carolina. Shull talks about prison plantations and work farms in the south, the emergence of the Blues as a musical genre and the difference between Delta Blues and Piedmont Blues. The talk is interspersed with musical selections. The session is introduced by Michigan State University Professor John P. Beck. Part of the "Our Daily Work/Our Daily Lives" Brown Bag series sponsored by the MSU School of Human Resources and Labor Relations, the MSU Museum, and the MSU Libraries' as part of its Colloquia Series. - University of Washington-Tacoma Professor of Humanities Michael Honey delivers a performance presentation titled, "Sharecropper's Troubadour: John L. Handcox, the Southern Tenant Farmers Union, and the African American Song Tradition." Based upon his own interviews with Handcox, Honey recounts the life of the folk singer and labor organizer, an African American raised in the Arkansas delta world of sharecropping, who became one of the most beloved folk singers of the prewar labor movement. Honey explains how Handcox shaped the labor music scene. He performs a number of labor anthems and plays recordings of others as he tells Handcox's story. Honey answers questions from the audience. He is introduced by Michigan State University Professor John P. Beck. Part of the "Our Daily Work/Our Daily Lives" Brown Bag series and the MSU Libraries' Colloquia Series, co-sponsored by the MSU School of Human Resources and Labor Relations, the MSU Museum, the MSU African American and African Studies Center, and University's Project 60/50. - Michigan State University Librarian Diana Rivera delivers a talk entitled, "Huelga!: Latino Labor and Poster Art." Rivera displays and describes the extensive collection of poster art from the MSU Libraries' Cesar Chavez Collection which she curates. She talks about events that led to the creation of a number of the posters supporting the United Farm Workers, several strikes and boycotts, and other Chicano labor and social justice actions. Rivera also talks about symbolism used in the posters, the use of Chavez's image, the artists who created the posters, and how the collection is being preserved and digitized by MSU Libraries' staff. Rivera is introduced by MSU Professor John P. Beck. - Kathleen Newman, Professor of English at Carnegie Mellon University, delivers a talk entitled, "Striking Images: Workers on Screen and in the Streets in the 1950's." Newman describes her interest in working class issues, worker and consumer activism, and explains how mass culture and media has marginalized workers. She says that workers have commonly been portrayed as dolts and that this perspective has effectively silenced the American majority. She provides several examples of this marginalization of the working class in television and movies and talks extensively about the film, "On The Waterfront". Newman answers questions from the audience. She is introduced by Michigan State University Professor John P. Beck. - Sherry Linkon, professor in the Department of Education at Georgetown University and author of "The half-life of deindustrialization: working-class writing about economic restructuring", delivers a talk entitled, "Tracing the half-life of deindustrialization: voices of Michigan." Linkon talks about the long term impact deindustrialization has on families and communities, specifically in Michigan. She argues that deindustrialization literature not only gives voices to those who have lived through deindustrialization, but that it is also a more effective way to promote social and political change in communities. Linkon answers questions from the audience. The event is convened by Professor John P. Beck from the Michigan State University School of Human Resources and Labor Relations.
