- Kathleen Newman, Professor of English at Carnegie Mellon University, delivers a talk entitled, "Striking Images: Workers on Screen and in the Streets in the 1950's." Newman describes her interest in working class issues, worker and consumer activism, and explains how mass culture and media has marginalized workers. She says that workers have commonly been portrayed as dolts and that this perspective has effectively silenced the American majority. She provides several examples of this marginalization of the working class in television and movies and talks extensively about the film, "On The Waterfront". Newman answers questions from the audience. She is introduced by Michigan State University Professor John P. Beck. - President Barack Obama speaks about his jobs plan and the economy at Fort Hayes Arts and Academic High School in Columbus, Ohio. Obama praises the school and says that there are many schools in the U.S. which could benefit from the type of renovation the bill outlines and that many construction workers would be put back to work if the bill passes. He urges Americans to tell their members of Congress to pass his "American jobs plan", saying that "the time for gridlock and games is over and the time for action is now." Obama declares that the bill, if passed, will create jobs for returning veterans, provide tax cuts for working people, and stimulate the economy. The crowd chants "pass this bill" at several intervals.
