Back reads, "The Detroit Museum of Art was built by popular subscription of the citizens of Detroit, at a cost of $225,000 in 1887. Its maintenance is paid for by the city and is open daily to public. Its collection of art is valued at $500,000, and includes the Stearns Oriental Collection, one of the best in the world; the James E. Scripps collection, of old masters, and large representations of the work of modern artists. Lectures to which the public is admitted free of charge are given regularly by the director and others."
